Hi everyone,

I am a graduate nurse finishing my course at the end of last year and about to commence my new grad job in the hospital in two weeks. However, AHPRA does not recognize my two-year full time equivalent education which I finished in 18 month with significantly shortened holiday period between semester.

I applied for general skilled migration in 2008 and granted my permanent residency status based upon this fast track combined course, and every international student would know that we have to finish a minimum of two-year study in Australia in order to be eligible to apply for skilled migration program. I feel that I am unfairly treated by AHPRA and seeking advice/help from you guys in terms of what to do and where to go for further assistance. I have been to Nursing and Midwifery Council NSW, and I was told that they can not do anything until AHPRA officially rejected my application (which means I can make a appeal if I got rejected). The staff from Immigration department asked me to go back to my previous college for further assistance as they can only provide documents regarding visa application. I am really frustrated now and I am so scared that I would lose my position in the hospital due to the delayed process of my registration.

From what i can recall during the application process, an applicant must have 5 years equivalent of study, and or english study. Its 5 years. Not 2 not 3 not 4 but fives years equivalent of study.

Im sure there are other education requirements that AHPRA accepts, cant remember them, but yeh, 5 years it is.

Yes, I know it's five year in total. The point I would like to make here is that besides three year nursing bachelor degree I finished last year, I am required to provide another two year full time equivalent education. And I finished my two year course which I undertook before I started nursing degree in a period of 18 months with shortened holiday period between semester, but AHPRA does not recognize it as two year equivalent education as it's a fast track course which enabled me to fulfill in 18 months. Moreover, ,my fast track course was recognized by Australia government as a two years full-time study which granted me my permanent residency status. I just feel that I am unfairly treated by AHPRA.

To buy yourself some time see if you can speak to your employer and explain the current situation you are in. So that you can negotiate working as an Assistant In Nursing (AIN) for the time being until you get your registration.

Someone I knew got accepted for a job at a hospital but would not graduate until two weeks later, so they were able to negotiate to work as an AIN initially until they graduated and fast tracked their registration to start working as an RN.

The other option is to defer your position later in the year.

If you are confident in your competency in English, take IELTS/OET. It will save you a lot of time and money (Income loss as an RN rather than an AIN as well as promotion in grade). Even though it seems unfair, it is the more cost effective solution as the income loss is cumulative. 

As for your hospital position, inform the administrators/managers and keep them updated. I know of someone who is suppose to start on January, but postponed his new graduate position twice and started in July instead. However, it is still subjected to the hospital management's decision.
