Hello peoples,

Needed a little bit of help regarding career progression and academic requirements.

I am going to be completing my BN via UTAS towards the end of next year, and am wishing to eventually become a Nurse Practitioner. Am I required to complete a graduate certificate within a certain discipline before being accepted into the Master of Nursing?
Also, do the GNP allow you to work part time whilst completing a certification??

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, a enormous congratulations to all the nurses who are going to be or are qualified for choosing such an incredibly trusted and well reputed career.
Thanks!

It depends what area of nursing you wish to become a nurse practitioner in. For example, if you wanted to work as a nurse practitioner in an emergency department you generally need to have at least 5yrs experience in that department and at least 2yrs working in a higher role (such a clinical nurse or CNC). You also generally need approvement from the facilitating hospital who will mentor you through the masters and need to be employed a number of hours in that department. As to whether or not you need a graduate certificate first, it depends on the university. Some masters degree's require you have a certain GPA to get in, or you need the grad cert first.
