so i finished my course in dec 2010 and am waiting for my registration to come thru.

I am looking in the employment section and it appears that as a EN you need to start in aged care to get experience and then look for work in the acute setting.

Have any new grads already received their registration and got a job I would be interested to see where you are working.

hi, i finished in November and am waiting for my rego to come through. i applied to a Ramsay hospital to do a grad program and was offered a place. exciting and scary too... i start end of Feb.

theres a real problem with the issue of many new EN's not being able to get into acute initially- a couple of friends of mine are still waiting to find out if they will be offered a job in acute. its really unfair if new ENs are forced to go into aged care because they have no other choice, aged care is definitely not for everyone so it could really put someone off nursing if thats their first exposure to the nursing world. if someone goes into aged care bcos they WANT to then thats fine, but being forced into it is altogether different. plus some people once theyve been in aged care for a while find they just dont have the confidence to move into acute. i work in nursing allocations for a nursing agency and i see that happen all the time.

if i were you id start calling every hospitals HR department and asking questions about work- it might not help of course, but thats what id be doing. id even start applying for other EN jobs on the internet that may ask for experience but just tell them that you are new and enthusiastic and keen for an opportunity to learn. basically id been doing absolutely everything i could to maybe 'get lucky' and find somewhere that will take a chance with someone who is new and inexperienced.

Hi Jules74,

I was just reading your post and was interested to read you had been offered a place in the EN graduate program with Ramsay Health. I'm currently studying my cert iv and will be finishing up in July. I would really love to also get into this program when I finish and have been reading up on it, on the internet for some time but am a little confused about when to apply and when the next intake begins. For example I read just recently that applications closed the end of November 2010 and then further down the page it said interviews would be held during the month of August, can this be right? That's what, 10 months after applying and so even though I don't graduate until July, 2011 I have missed out because applications have closed? Am I reading this right? Would you mind sharing your experience? Did you wait until you had graduated to apply or did you start the process earlier? Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated !! May I also ask, do you know of any other EN grad programs available other than those in the city? I do know Cabrini offers one have you heard of any others?

hi Megan,
my advice is to ignore what it says on the website regarding dates etc at the moment , because they really only apply to the Div 1 program. for the EN programmes i think they are run in August and Febuary, and when they are ready to start taking applications they advertise on Seek, and on the Ramsay Gradplus website. i did exactly the same as you when i first looked at their website- i panicked and thought omg ive missed out without even knowing they were advertising!! their ads were on seek about a month before the closing date for applications so if i were you id start checking seek and the ramsay gradplus website in june (for august intake), and just keep checking regularly. around that time you could also contact the gradplus co-ordinator around then and she'll confirm whether they are soon to start advertising.

im not sure that Cabrini does do a grad year for EN's. i spoke to someone from there at the nursing expo in 2010, and she said she wasnt sure if they would be running one or not. she did say though that if they do, its a mid year program, so id contact them and ask. ive also heard that some of the healthscope hospitals might take new En's but im not sure if they actually have a specific program.

its a really good idea to go to the nursing expo, you can have a chat to all the hospitals there that appeal and find out if they will be doing a program or not.

hope that helps?

Hi Jules,

Thanks for your advice, I feel much better now! Was beginning to worry I may have been too late! I will definitely keep an eye out on seek when the time comes and going to the nursing expo is a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. I had a look at when it's on, which is May and I'll be looking forward to gathering some more info then. It's quite tricky when you're starting out isn't it? Knowing where to begin?. Well I wish you all the very best with your Grad Program, good luck!
