Hello one and all...

I have been reading the posts (and replies) on here with great interest over the past few weeks. I am a 28 year old guy who is taking the plunge next year and starting a full time Bachelor of Nursing. It is a huge change for me, as I have spent the last 10 years in varying management roles, but I have decided to grab the metaphorical bull by the horns and jump into the degree.

Does anyone have any advice as to what I am likely to encounter as far as study and the job itself goes for a male? I have no doubt I will encounter the stereotypical "you must be gay" attitude from the narrow minded crowd, but those people can get stuffed as far as I am concerned. I am passionate about the health system and want to do nursing, so what does it matter that I am a guy.

All going to plan, I will be doing my Bachleor of Nursing through QUT in 2010 (I have applied through QTAC and my OP is about 4 under what it needs to be) and will have it knocked off full time in 3 years.

Anyhow, I am probably rambling now, but I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.

Keep smiling everyone...

Hello corpusdelicti,

I'm also about to start next year at CQU part time next year. This is also going to be a big change for me as I've had 20 years in the IT industry.
Anyway, I have no advice for you apart from good luck.

All the best in your studies. At times Uni can be a huge challenge with full time study demanding alot of commitment. However once you are on your way and into the groove of it, you soon find a pace you are comfortable with.

As a male RN at times it can be a little off putting with some of the female staff welcoming each other and seemingly ignoring you but I would say this is the minority. There will also be some patients that don't want a man to shower them etc (understandable) but this too is the minority. This can be overcome by redelegating tasks to facilitate everyone feeling comfortable. All in all I personally don't have many issues at work but it does help to have fairly broad shoulders. It is a great profession with great job prospects and can be very rewarding.

As males in a female dominated profession we are very much the minority but we can also contribute in positive ways. If you don't have a huge respect for the female species then maybe this isn't the best career choice.

Cheers

Hello Corpusdelicti,

Welcome on board! Glad to know another male jumping into nursing *applause*. Your situation sounds all familiar and similar to mine; I'm leaving a well carved corporate career of 10 years to go into nursing (and other than the fact that I am 30 years old - ugh!). Mates think I'm 'dumb' making this move but they say that with a lot of envy. I'm just done giving lectures and being 'behind the scenes' - its time to be in the battle field!!

When do you start? I'm in for Feb 2010 down in Griffith Uni, Gold Coast!

Forget about the stereotyping, it matters not. Be very good at what you do and it'll usually shuts people up.

Regards - M

LOL...Welcome to nursing corpusdelicti. Are you doing the three year course or a Grad entry?

Anyways its good to know that there will be more male nurses......Go for it mate. If you need some help settling in with QUT, give me a buzz....You may want to strategize your way to make it easier....for example CP5 (clinical placement 5) is in the last semester of third year..it can be the hardest even though there are only 3 subjects you need to take...its because placement is 8 weeks and can upset your studies. Some of us have worked a way around it...sort of....LOL. Anyway all the best.

Im yet to actually meet a male nurse who is gay...so figure that one out! lol. Every male nurse i know is married (to a woman) 99% of male nurses i know are very good, a few are just only interested in becoming management and dont really care about the patients but thats only a couple. Depending on what field of nursing you end up in there are different reactions, ive had a few elderly ladies who werent comfortable with having a male nurse but generally male nurses are very well accepted in this profession. Good luck with your studies, I went to QUT and had a blast!
