Hey everyone. I'm a div 2 student about to go on my first clinical placement in aged care. Just wondering what sort of stuff everyone got to do on their aged care placement? Was it all bed making and toileting? or did you do blood pressures and that sort of stuff as well.

I think it depends on how much you have learnt at Tafe so far - some of the things that you could do are toileting, bed making, showering, feeding as well as wound dressings, BSL's, peg feeds, obs etc. if you have done the theory of these. You have competencies to do on placement - showering etc and usually you do a nursing care plan on a particular resident too.

Ours was all about the basic nursing skills - ADLs. Take advantage of any extras you can pick up while you're there. We were placed primarily with the AIN/PCAs so whenever I could talk with the RN/EEN on duty, I'd do that. Watch them give out meds etc. We did some obs, but not many as they don't take them often in aged care. We would participate in the diversional therapy and go out with the residents when possible. Our facility was great in the fact they didn't have pressure area sores & minimal skin tears etc. So I now recognise a very good home. I have since been to a place that showed me the opposite. It gave me real insight and appreciation. Learn what you can and enjoy.

Hi Alli

Im a Div2 enjoying my work in acute and rehab as bank nurse and now I've been accepted as a community nurse which I enjoy most. Anyway re your first placement in aged care, you'probably know that it's all basic nursing - shower, toiketing, feeding, assisting in mobility, transferring and documentation. You''d be lucky if you get to do OBS, peg feeding, etc. and that all depends on the facility you'd be going to and your buddies. If you have an excellent teacher and a supportive buddy, then you'll be fine. Just watch out for those who are B***Y you know what I'm saying..they're just there to make you feel intimidated.have no fear..just do what you're supposed to do and do it right..Good luck and keep me posted with your placements..

Well i finished placement last week. Had an absolute ball. We mainly did toileting, showering, bedmaking and feeding. But we also got to do BGL's. And i got to watch a peg feed which was really interesting. But yeah i know what u mean about taking whatever experience u can get hehe.. I was the only student without a pca background.. so luckily i got to do ALOT. :)

Jade i just realised your in cheltenham?? im an ex cheltenham chick hehe.. i live in bentleigh now a days. Did u grow up around chelt?? We might know each other.

I am off to 1st placement in 5 weeks and it will be aged care. We have only covered bedmaking and the process of showering in IMPLIMENT BASIC NURSING CARE so I guess we will be mainly doing these activites. You have to start somewhere I guess. As i am coming with NO experience at all I think these activites will be dautning enough

Hey Deancey, dont stress out. I'm an ex hairdresser and i was brand new to nursing too (no pca background). You will have a ball. We covered brushing teeth, shaving and bedmaking as well as bed bathing before going on placement. But yeah if your not sure, your buddy nurse should show you how to do things. Remember your there to learn. And after the first day or two once u get to know the residents you'll be pretty comfortable with showering and stuff. Where abouts r u studying?????

Alli

I am studying at Vu st albans. I am loving it, the people in the course are really nice, most are mums with young kids. The teachers are also really lovely. I am really excited to go out on placement and am so glad that you had a great time. I really hope all goes well. I think putting it into practice will be very exciting.
Where are you studying?

I'm studying with health train. They run their classes out of a few different places but yea im out the other side.. I'm studying in cheltenham. But yeah i know what u mean, i'm loving the course (apart from the exams ive got coming up hehe..i always stress out over exams.. especially anatomy and physiology) but the placement really does put everthing into action.
I'm a more hands on learner, so even though i was fairly nervous about placement i got ALOT out of it. Deancey do you use msn?? if so whats your addy. It would be nice to keep in touch with a few people in a similair situation to mine. Also i'd be happy to help you out if u get stuck on anything seen as i'm probably only a few months ahead of you (its all still pretty fresh in my mind)

Hi Alli,

I just noticed that you are studying with Healthtrain in Cheltenham. I have recently applied with them for the July intake, I've actually got the info session and test next week. I was just wondering how you are finding the course and if so far your're happy with healthtrain. Would you mind if I ask, did you find getting into the course was difficult? I'm asking because I have also applied with Chisholm and it's really hard to get into and they are only taking a very small number of people and I was wondering if Healthtrain was much the same. Any info would be great! Megan

Hey megan, i am happy with healthtrain. The teachers are really supportive (they're not their to fail you). I can't really compare about getting into the course because health train was the first one i applied for. I didnt do too well on the entrance exam.. mainly because of nerves. But i did really well at my interview and got in. Where is the course ur applying for?? like where will it be run out of??
Is maureen holding the information night? She is lovely.. but will try and give u a bit of a scare at the info night with what nursing is all about and the study load that you'll be taking on - because even though its part time the study can be daunting at times- especially for me.. i'm more hands on than academic.. but i'm getting through. Add me on msn if u like - alliburrell@gmail.com

Hey Alli,

Thanks for replying,

I'm not exactly sure where the course is being ran out of. All I know is the info session and testing is at cheltenham, Warrigal road. I'm hoping to learn a bit more next week. I have spoken to Maureen and she was lovely and I did get a good vibe from her. I recently sat through Chisholm's info night and test and that too was pretty intense. That one is fulltime . I think I did really well with their test but I didn't get all the questions in the maths sectioned finished in time ( I didn't finish 16, the time went so fast!! ) so that means I probably won't get a high enough score to get into the course even though I think I got them all right! hence why I'm applying to healthtrain.

Anyway I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the course and I'll keep my fingers crossed I'll get in!

My email is afraser72@hotmail.com Would love to hear more about your course as you go along! Megan,
