Hi there Was thinking of applying to Chisholm Berwick to do Div 2 nursing and was wondering if anyone else had or is studying there. Am thinking of doing full time which I believe is 3 days a week and getting through the course in 1 year which starts in July compared to part time which doesn't start till next year.. If anyone else is doing full time, your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Anthea

Hi Emma I am a bit nervous about doing the Vetassess test. Haven't studied for awhile. Do you know how many study hours outside of school is recommended. I was originally looking to do this course Part time but the intake is not until Feb 2010 and Cathy from Chisholm said that full time was only 3 days a week. I assuming they will be full on days. Will you be working while you study. I have 3 kids so I will have to make sure I can fit everything in. It will be great to know people before we start (assuming I pass the entrance exam).lol
Talk soon Anthea

Hi guys, just me again! I wasn't sure if my post would work but thankfully it did. I'm currently brushing up on my maths at the moment for the vetassess and from other posts I've read the sample test is a great help so I guess time will tell! Also I'm pretty sure fulltime is 3 days a week with 8 hour days anywhere between 8.00am and 10.00pm. Anyway look forward to hearing any info you guys find out as I'll be a mature age student/mum and I'm very nervous!!! Megan

Hi All, I will be studying only but I also have 3 little ones to look after..I have been doing some practice with the vetassess sample test aswell..I'm trying not to overload myself with 2 much info as it has been a while since I have studyed aswell and so I'm slowly trying to ease myself back into it.. Would be good to keep in touch. Do you know how long it takes to hear back from the Tafe on when to go to the info night and to book the Test after applications have closed?? Cheers Emma

Hi Emma & Megan Its good to know that I wont be the only mature aged student. I am not sure when we will hear anything, but I have been looking at the Vetassess test session and it looks like Chisholm has 2 in April for our course 7/4/09 and the 16/4/09. I am assuming these are going to be the ones we will have to sit. Also says these test are at Dandenong. Emma are you concern about fitting in full time study with 3 kids. I will be putting 2 of mine in Day care and 1 will be at school. Was reading another post from someone attending RMIT and she said that you need to do 2 hours study everyday. Must start preactising the vetassess test.

Hi guys, Applications for Chisholm close today,so hopefully it wont be too long before we hear something. It's all a bit nerve racking! I too have kids 6 and 8 and am worried sick about how I'm going to fit everything in!, so it's good to know you guys are in a similar position! Anthea, I found a really good web site to help with my maths for the test. Charles Sturt Uni NSW have maths tutorials and plenty of practice exercises to do especially for student nurses. I found this brilliant and it's helped heaps. I think it was in the student support section. I also spoke to a skills support lady at Chisholm Dandenong and she posted out a drug calcs tutorial as well for me to read through as I have a feeling but not 100% sure there might be a question re. droplet rate on the test. This is also covered on the Charles Sturt site. I hope this helps you a little. By the way do you know if we have to go for an interview? Emma, I live in Pearcedale! Look forward to hearing any other news you find out! Megan

I have read that there is the compulsary info night and the vetassess test you have to sit, but on things I've read there is an interview and then some things don't mention anything about it.. Not sure I suppose it will all the explained at the info night and thats were we will get to ask all our questions. My msn/email is epanky2002@hotmail.com if you want to add me and we can chat some more.. Cheers Emma

Hi Anth, Megan and Emma. I applied for the Div 2 in Berwick last year. Unfortunately i didnt get in by the vetassess testing method, but i did get in with the pathways to health program. This lasts for 3 months, 1 day a week and will cost you $800. If you pass all the subjects with a 70% score, you get guaranteed entry into the Div 2. I started my course in January this year and it is 3 days a week, and 1 day a fortnight extra for lab sessions. I will hopefully be qualified by Christmas, even though i know i am going to struggle with the medication exam, you need to get a 100% pass rate for this. I am enjoying the course so far, and we have lots of women in my group who have babies and young kids (me included, i have 4) If you keep on top of your homework and work in your groups you will have no probs. Im not sure if they are still doing the pathways to health program, but its worth a shot.. Good luck and if you need anymore info let me know...

Hi Savana Thanks for the information. So every fortnight you are at school for 4 days a week, is that right. Do you also work elsewhere or are you only studing. I am starting to think that I might not have enough time in the day to study full time. I also have to work in a family business and am thinking part time will be better for me. How much study every night would you do?

Hi Savanna, It's good to hear from someone already doing the div 2 course. I presume the 3 days is fulltime? I was wondering how you found out about the pathways program, was that something mentioned to you after your vetassess test? It's handy to know that all is not lost if we don't go as well on the test as we would like. If you don't mind can I ask what score you actually got? I'm just interested to kn ow how cut throat it Is lol ! Also how do you find the study and combining family commitments? I have a 6y.o and 8y.o so I know I'll have my days reasonably free to do homework etc but I'm still worried i won't be able to fit in things like school commitments and after school activities and house work etc..etc. I just keep telling myself I'll cross that bridge when I come to it! Another thing I'm curious about are the hours you do at chisholm. The info I have read is 8hr days anywhere between 8.00am and 10.00pm? What sort of hours do you do? I'm hoping I'll get more of an insight into the course at the info night which is in April. I just hate the unknown!! Anyway I'm glad your're enjoying it, I look forward to having a chat and hearing how your going with everything! Megan Ps. Sorry about the 50,000 questions!!!

Hi Megan and Anth, i attended the vetassess test and we were told about the pathways to nursing program that was going to be held at Berwick and Frankston campuses. It was Mondays 8am till 3pm, but we always got away around 2.30pm. The course was $800, but was alot cheaper if you are on centrelink payments, something ridiculous like $55 or something, but dont quote me on that. ( i considered leaving my husband for 3 months) The modules were and the scores i got were Medical terminology-89% Infection control and policies and procedures-90% OHS and processess-87% Apply 1st aid- satisfactory/competent culturally diverse clients-95% Introduction to anatomy and physiology- Competent Basic numeracy- competent. If you get 70% and over for each subject, its direct entry. My days are Mon-8am till 3pm (we leave at 2.30pm), Tues-3pm till 10pm (leave at 9.30pm) alternate weds-8am till 11am, and then Fri-8am till 3pm (leave at 2.30pm). I also have to work on a casual basis at my place of employment on Thursdays, and i work alternate weekends doing a 24 hour shift.. I need to do this to pay my bills, if i had the choice i wouldnt work at all. Has you can see i have a busy week, but hey it will be worth it in the end.. Im lucky because my husband takes my kids to school, i have to leave at 07.10 to get to Tafe for 8am. I found that there wasnt much difference with part time really, its 2 days a week alternate 3 and its an extra year on top.. You can ring Berwick and ask if the pathways is still running, i will ask tomorrow though and will post on weds evening.. I hope i have answered all your questions ( i should be studying, but im 2 busy on facebook) Ask away if you need anymore info, the course is full on but im looking 4ward to getting my registration at the end of it :) savanna x

Hey Savanna, Thanks for all the info! This all gives me a bit of an idea as to the hours etc that I'll possibly be doing. It doesn't sound all that bad I'm sure I can manage with a bit of juggling! I was just wondering did you sit the vetassess test or decide to do the pathways program straight up? Do many people do it that way? Also how are you coping with homework etc? Are you swamped with it or is it manageable?. I'm glad to hear your're enjoying it all, I'm sure that 12 mths will go really fast!! Megan

Hi Megan I actually sat 2 vetassess exams, i passed them both but didnt get accepted. At the 2nd attempt we were told that there was the pathways course running, but you had to be quick to get your name down. I really dont think you need to sit the vetassess exam to get accepted into pathways. I asked today, and i was told there was a pathways running now, so you have missed this one, but ring Berwick and ask when the next one is starting. I have just finished some homework (group homework) and it has taken me a couple of hours at least, thats with kids mithering tho !!! There is quite a bit of group homework, so if you get into a group that works hard, you will find it easier. Everyone sticks together and encourages you to do your work, if you dont do it you let the group down, so you feel as if you want to do it.. We have our 1st exam next week, legal and ethical :( seems pretty straight forward tho so im not stressing about it too much. We have also got placements in April, which are going to be the main worry. Its 4 weeks of unpaid work and you can get put anywhere from Narre Warren to Elsternwick, or Rye. Its the luck of the draw where you get really... They are very strict on turning up 4 placements, they do not care if you have kids or not and you are expected to be there at 08;50 on the dot.. I hope i have answered your questions, if not fire away and i will answer when i get the time :) Savanna.

Hey Savanna, That really sucks about the vetassess tests! That must have been really frustrating! Have you found that by doing the pathways you were better prepared for the Div 2? Looking at some of the subjects you covered it seems like you would actually have a bit of a leg up on things. I'm supposed to be doing my test on the 7th April and that's when we get all the info for the course supposedly. That's only 2 weeks away so I think I may as well wait until then sit the test and see how I do. If I had known about the pathways program sooner I would have been really tempted to take that option but never mind. I am really glad that could be a good backup plan if I don't do well on the test or my score isn't high enough.( Although I have been studying like crazy!! ). I really appreciate all your info Savanna, this is all new to me as I haven't studied for about 18years!! and it's good to talk to someone who is already in the thick of things! Anyway I better let you get back to all that homework!! Talk to you later. Megan

Hi Meagn Yes, the pathways has helped alot. Why dont you ring Berwick and ask them if they are running another pathways, that way you wont need to sit the vetassess test. If it is not mentioned at the actual test (if you go) bring the subject up... If you do decide to go for the test, make sure you get there really early, or quite late.. The queues are really long, and if you get there early you will be stood around for hours. The last time i went, we queued for around 90 mins. In the end it ws standing room only cos there were so many applicants. Like you, i havent studied for years, 23 to be exact !!!!
Ok must go, i have a legal and ethical exam this afternoon. Im getting nervous has this is the 1st exam of this semester....gulp.... Good luck in all you do and let me know how you get on... Savanna
