Hi there

I will be graduating mid year this year and focussing right now on fixing my resume up. I sent my resume to my older sister and she made some subtle changes to it and put an additional skills part into it. I just dont know if I should add these components to it:

  • Assess & manage wounds, including application of dressings
  • Dispense medications, IV infusions & intramuscular injections
  • Central Line dressing & IV therapy
  • Knowledge of various illnesses & disorders.
  • Experinced in pre- & post- operative monitoring
  • Maintain patient records, format care plans, and provide handover

Like I can do these things but my instincts tell me not to put them in as i dont want to sound over the top.

Let me know what you think?

best regards

Hi Crazycat,

It's great that you are putting some time and thought into preparing your CV now so you have time to revise and taylor it to suit each application. It's also great that your sister is willing to help you.

Applying for a GNP the facility will know what you have done as a student and that you are a beginner RN so although it seems like a good idea to put some of these newly acquired skills down in your letter I think it would be best to put something that will help you stand out in the crowd of applications each place will get.

Something like 'As a graduate registered nurse I believe I will bring to the position the following skills:-

Enthusiasm, motivation, commitment and a genuine enjoyment of my work

A professional, responsible and accountable attitude

The ability to adapt and learn with an ongoing commitment to lifelong learning'.......etc etc

A personal statement as to what you believe nursing is and what it means to you may also be viewed well. CV's and application letters are highly indivdual and I think many managers will appreciate seeing something a little different but that still covers the important points. It takes time to polish and get it just right so keep at it and listen to all the advice you can but decide what will best represent you.

Good luck in your studies and your applications.

Susiebee.

I agree with Susiebee,

The employers will assume you have a knowledge of basic nursing skills because you have successfully completed your Bachelor of Nursing and been granted Registration.

Therefore, it would be better to focus on why they should employ you, what excites you about nursing, what you look forward to about that workplace etc

Good Luck

Hi, goodluck with your interviews. My absolute resource for resume writing and interview preparation is, "Anatomy of a Job Search; A Nurse's Guide to Finding and Landing the Job You Want" by Jeanna Bozell. An american book, but just as relevant here, available via the web.
