Hi,

I'm currently filling out my SATAC application to CDU to try and get into nursing externally next year. Can anyone give me any advice on how to improve my chances of getting in please? I don't really want to do a personal competencies letter or fill in my employment details because I've pretty much been a stay at home mum for the last 11 years. I'm just plain scared!

Is anyone else thinking of applying for next year as well? Thanks:)

Hi Summerly, I too have applied for CDU next year, and also CSU, CQU and UniSa. Do you have any previous nursing/medical training background at all? If not, I think they do bridging programs..cdu have a thing called Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) gives you the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to succeed at university and gives you direct entry into your course next time if you dont get in this time around.
May as well do the letter and employments section, something is better than nothing afterall. May I ask where your from? I am from Mildura, VIC. Applying all over the country trying to get in to uni.
Dont be scared, its exciting.

Hi, I am in Melbourne. I'm still filling in my application at the moment, hoping to use old year 12 and stat scores to get in. I was working in aged care as a pca. I'm currently doing WIST through CQU at the moment but won't be finished by Dec 2011 so can't use that on my application. I would apply to CQU, so far they've been great, only the fact that there are so many residential schools compared to CDU. Hubby has such a full on job that going up twice a year to QLD would be nearly impossible, and we have no family here to help with the kids. I was told by SATAC that I have to take my documents down to VTAC to be certified, so I'm organising all that at the moment. It's all very hectic.

Summerly, your work in aged care should be a big help in your application. The wist program your doing, you should be able to include that in your application..when you enter those in you can say whether the training is complete or due to be complete by the end of the year, so you should be able to, and it will also help you with your application too.
Im in the same boat too with no babysitters and a fulltime working hubby, I think mine will take his long service leave when i need to go away.
Or someone mentioned to me on another forum that they have child care centres up there where the res schools are being held...might be pricey, but its one solution. Or if you have your kids in child care where you live, ur hubby can pick them up each day after he finishes work..i dunno.
Whats this about taking your documents to VTAC?? Cant you get a justice of the peace or something to verify them? I got a school principal to verify mine and I posted all my documents to all the institutions.

Hi Mrsmedic

I think I can only include the bridging course if I will be finished in Dec 2011, which I'm pretty sure I won't be, more like Jan or Feb. Just not enough hours in the day at the moment. And I rang VTAC to see if they have an agreement with SATAC to certify docs and they had no clue. So will call SATAC again today. Hopefully a JP would be easier. I'm assuming you are already a div 2/EN if you are applying at CSU as well? I would have prefered to do the diploma first but can't afford full fees, even with vet fee help. More cost effective to do the degree. I've asked my mum if she'll be able to come over and babysit while I go and do the residential schools, but we'll see. Good luck with your applications! :)

Hi Summerly,
I would still include the bridging program if you can, every little bit helps. Im not really an EN, I did the cert IV back in 2003 but did not get my registration as I went straight on and did my paramedic studies instead, and have not worked as a nurse or ambo at all.
So I have given the institutions all my certificates, so we will see if it is good enough, its worth a shot afterall.
I think a JP should be fine, you have the option of VTAC doing the certifications, but otherwise a JP is used, there are heaps of different people you can use, when you do your application they have sections there on certifying documents that tell you who you can use and what you have to do.
Are you only applying for CDU and CQU or will you try the others out too?
How much does the diploma cost? I thought even with the VET Help thing you still dont pay? Not until after you complete your studies anyway.
Speak to you soon.

Hi Mrsmedic,

no, so far I'm only applying to CDU. If I don't get in then I'm going to look at midyear application for cqu next year as well, as I should definately have finished the wist course. But I have my fingers crossed for cdu as this is the only course that sort of ticks most of the boxes for our family situation if you know what I mean. I have a few different plans for if I don't get in.

I have heard that csu is really good though, for external studies. Pity you can't go from first year.

The diploma here in Vic ranges from about $11000 to $15000 for me because I have a previous diploma and so can't get a government funded place. I could put that on fee help, but that is an extra 25% on top, so I'm not too keen to get hugely in debt when that could go towards a degree instead.

Start with SATAC and take it from there. They seem to take pretty much anyone up here, most likely due to the fact that most people drop out pretty sharpish.

You'll be right.

Oh my... Why do so many drop out?

I've just got to finish my personal competencies letter and then I can send everything in. Does anyone have any advice about writing it. Is it okay to do it in first person?

Just check, all ok...didnt have to do one. I have no idea why though, all i had to send were all my previous certificates. And I sent my resume in there too for a bit of extra info for them. Can get my heart back into a normal rhythm now..got a bit scared then.
Cant wait for January for offers to come out, time is going soooo slow.

Well, I didn't think I'd have to do a personal competencies letter either, but the 3rd person I spoke to at SATAC said that it's recommended, so I'm doing one. Just in case. Painful though. How do you go about selling yourself when it's not something you normally do? Although, if I didn't actually need to do one then would having done one count against me? Confusing!

The drop out ratio for nursing students is huge.

It's not an easy course and I think most people are thrown by the amount of science involved. That might sound obvious but I think a lot of people don't think about that when they apply. There's a common myth that a nursing degree is easy. I can tell you now it's not at all easy. Contact hours at Uni appear to be way above most other subjects (at least in the first year), and there's quite a lot of exams to do too.

When I started my degree the first weeks lectures were full. We're talking 80+ students. By census date a month later we were down to less than 20. Numbers have dwindled further to the extent where sometimes there's 3 of us in a lecture. There are way more external students though. My advise to you if your studying externally is just to use Learnline as much as possible. Use the discussion forums, work with people, get a study buddy.

Thanks for the advice. I will be studying externally, and it's hard. Staying motivated can be a big task. If I get into nursing and find I don't like it then that's fine, but I thought I would always regret it if I didn't at least try and give it my best shot.
