I've just applied to study nursing at CQU via distance (part-time). I'm 40 years old with no experience in nursing.

Has anyone had any experience studying nursing via distance learning? I have not been accepted yet so I will have to wait and see.

Thanks!

Hi Suzanne,

I'm in my first year at CQU now and studying for my exams next month. I'm really enjoying the course. I'm studying part-time which suits me fine.

The delivery of the course is excellent and CQU has been a great experience so far.

If there is anything else you need to know just ask.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave , So part time ? Is that 2 modules per semester? Is CQU supportive with distant ed? How many rsidential school do you need to go too ? I am 39 . I have applyed for mid year intake but there is only 55 places . So I dont like my chances of getting in this round ? If I dont I will apply for semester 1 2011 . How many places where offered when you applied ?

Hi Suzanne,

At 39 your still younger than me! I'm not sure how many places were offered when I applied. I know the nursing degree is quite popular because of the flex delivery.

I must say it works well for me. I'm doing 2 subjects per semester. They also offer 2 subjects in semester 3 which means you can speed up the process if you want.

I don't know what your chances of getting in during the mid year intake would be (I suspect good), but you will have no problem getting in 2011.

So far CQU have been very supportive. When I had some issues about attending one of the exams I had a call the next day from the tutor and the head of the course. They were great. For your first semester you will need to attend a 2 day res school assuming two subjects. If you have any more questions just let me know.

By the way I just sat the A&P exam today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the results are good!

Good luck with the application.

Hi there, I also applied for mid year intake to CQU nursing. Unfortunately for me, I didn't get in. I rang QTAC this morning and found out that my rank was 83 and the cut off rank was 86, pretty high!!! (normally 63).

I am going to be doing a diploma at TAFE first (18 months) then see if I can get into uni at a second year student level to do my bachelor. This will only take me a total of 3 1/2 years and I don't have to wait to start studying.

I hope you got in, if you didn't then at least you now know that the cut of was freakishly high for nursing :o)

Hi happy2bme ,

What TAFE are you going to do your Diploma with ? Is it external ? I could of started my Diploma but it was very expensive and didnt have any HECS to help with payments . I have heard some TAFE's are doing HELP with fees and paid off once working ? Guess I may as well wait until Jan and see how I go...

I'm going to be studying at Tropic North Qld TAFE. Apparently it can be done externally if you course search nursing on the tnqit.tafe.qld.gov.au website you should find the diploma. I will be doing it face to face two days per week though, the rest external.

The couse it partly government funded so is only costing e $3,700. Quite a bargain if you compare it to southbank TAFE fees for the same course of $16,000!!!

I hope this information has been helpful.

Hi HappyToBeMe,

All is not lost as far as getting into CQU (if you still want to).
They run a short course called WIST/LIFT. It is essentially a bridging course with science as the focus. You do a couple of quizzes (open book).
Once you pass the course you can get into the degree program. I've attached a link if you want to have a look

Suzanne, I forgot to mention that the diploma also has a discounted price for a concession card holder. The cc price is about $2,300. But if you are interested, phone the TAFE and ask questions about being completely external, I couldn't see any mention of it being completely external in the letter I got from them today.

Thanks for that info/link Dave.

If I didn't have the opportunity to study the diploma next month I would definately jump at it just to feel like I was doing something towards my end goal.

The more I reflect on the fact that I missed out on CQU, the happier I am with doing TAFE first. 18 months of TAFE is cheaper than the first year at uni (although I have to pay it upfront) and after my diploma I can work as a nurse while studying at uni. Plus, I think I will do better face to face, completely external scaired me a little.

I have a husband who is itching for a change of jobs and so CQU would have been perfect if we needed to move again (we only moved at christmas) but I am just going to put my foot down for 18 month that I won't move. Hopefully he will feel settled by then and I can go to the JCU near here full time.

How did you go with your A & P exam? I have a few nursing text books and the A & P ones are the most daunting to me.

Hi HappyToBeMe,

Good luck with the studying.

I think I did ok in the A&P exam. Like you I was very worried when I got the textbook. However, you do not need to know all of it for your first exam (thank god!).
Generally it's only subsections of some of the chapters. It stilll requires quite a bit of study. But I enjoyed most of the A&P stuff which made it easier.
Some of the essay writing for the other course was painful though!

Hi Suzanne,

Well done. I thnk you will really enjoy the course. I'm waiting for the results of my subjects from term 1.
It's great that they have introduced semester 3. It means doing it part time doesn't have to take as long!

Good Luck with it and i'll see you on the CQU forums.

By the way. If you need the history of nursing book let me know.

regards,
Dave

Hi Suzanne,

I go to Noosa for my res schools which is not that far from Brisbane I suppose. I really enjoyed the res school for A&P especially learning about the heart.

From what I hear they are planning on introducing more subjects for Semester 3. It should reduce the time to complete the course quite a bit.

Good luck with it and if I can help please let me know.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!

Well done Suzanne :o) and you have already enrolled in some classes, you are very keen. Do you mind telling me what your rank was for qtac? I'm just wondering if I would have been given an offer too if I hadn't decided that TAFE was best for me.

I've got a small pickle of a problem. My classes start the 26th July and the very next week, I am away on holidays for a week (nonrefundable mostly). I'm worried about telling the instructors that I will be away and yet if I don't say something then I won't know what work I should be looking over while I'm away so that I don't fall too far behind. Anyone got advice as to what might happen with TAFE?

That 3rd semester at CQU was part of the appeal to me, being able to plan a 3yr degree over 2 1/2 years. Very smart idea.

Hes Suzanne, as soon as I decided that I was better off doing the face to face style of learning at TAFE, I firmly accepted my offer which discluded me from the next offer round.

As soon as we get our time table on orientation day, I will hopefully know which subjects will be planned for that week I am away. I have the booking agent trying to find me a place to access the internet as I can't find any internet cafes on the web and there isn't internet at our accommodation. I should be able to keep up with all my online class work atleast but am worried about missing the face to face days as they are the equivalent of residentials and are essential attendance. Maybe I will get lucky and the class will be doing the "apply first aid" during that week and I can just go do it some weekend at the red cross or something. Fingers crossed for me please. I just had another thought, maybe when the distance students do their residentials, I can catch up in their class? Oh the worry, an ulcer for sure before I even start.

Thought I would mention this here for you as well. Check out an online store called the book depository, it is in the UK but is really cheap on most titles. Be careful when choosing texts that are australian edition though, but they do stock some of them.
