Hi guys I accepted my offer last week and have just received the first lot of information in the mail about enrolling in the units. I will be working full-time, so will have to do part-time study, but I'm curious as to whether anybody will be doing full-time study (4 units) while also working? I really think it would be too much, but I'll enrol in 2 for the first semester, and if I miraculously manage it easily I can always enrol in more the next semester. Hope there's a few of you out there doing the same as me! Megan

I'm enrolling for FT. I work night shift though an agency so I can organise my shift availability around online learning.

I think I am going to enrol for full time and if I can't hack it i will drop back. I will also be working. If i enrolled part time i think i would find i wouldn't end up switching to full time.

Lulu: I think I might do that actually. That's what I initially thought - give full time a go, and see how I go. I can always drop back if it's too much. I'd rather try first. Thanks for your input guys. Where are you both located?

Hi everyone, I have just started doing some research on nursing degrees, I've decided I need a career change. I'm 29 years old this year however I can't work out how it would be feasible for me to stop working fulltime to study. I did come across the JCU external bachelor of nursing and just wanted to see if you guys knew how many hours online that you need to complete for fulltime and part time. Are all of you going to be continuing to work and study? Thanks for the info Rach

hi Meggles, im still unsure what i'll do. my sister and i are doing it together so whatever we do we'll both do the same option. im leaning towards starting off full time and seeing how it goes, and then switching to p/t if f/t is too much. im keen to get it done as quick as possible and keep it as close to 2yrs as i can. has anyone actually spoken to the Uni, or does anyone know for certain that its easy enough to move from f/t to p/t and vice versa. im nervous of starting 1st semester f/t and then finding out we cant switch to p/t 2nd semster. i was going to call CDU and try and speak to someone to get confirmation that the process is easy enough before we actually enrol.

Hi I studied externally with CDU. I also worked full time for some of it. It can be done but it will be all consuming. But only for 12/13 weeks at a time- so during sememster it was only work and uni but then your on holidays again. So it is doable. BUT I would suggest you get organised with your lifestyle. There are no issues with changing your workload as long as you closly look at pre req's and have completed it within 6 yrs. i am so excited right now ...... I start my post grad in 8 days!!!!! I can NOT advise you enough about checking the pre rec's for future subjects when decising to drop subjects or go part time. Good luck

thanks Glam for that info! thats exactly what i needed to know. and im guessing there must be someone you can go to for advise about those pre-requisite subjects etc before you actually make any big decisions? to be honest i still havent really gotten my head around how it works in general this external uni thing! : ) it'll become clearer i guess once ive enrolled....

quirks - No such thing as "just" the diploma. I was going to do that too, but there's no decent external courses in WA, so just went the full hog. You're still studying a difficult qualification so don't under cut yourself :)
Rachel29 - Hey. I'm the same - definitely can't stop working full time to study - need the money.
I don't know anything about JCU's courses, but as with all university courses externally the hours you put in depend entirely on you.
They usually "recommend" 10 hours per week study for each unit (yeah right!) but to be honest, everybody learns differently. Some people won't need very long at all to just do their weekly readings in textbooks and perhaps start a bit of an upcoming assignment etc so it doesn't all pile up at once. I've actually decided to join the others in here and go full-time first and see how I go. If I struggle terribly I can always withdraw or just drop down to part-time next semester. There's always options with uni :)
jules - That's great that you're doing it with your sister - you can push each other. I'm really hoping to find other external students in Perth so that we can get together as a study group and help each other out. Yeah, as I said above, I've decided to just say "Stuff it!" and give full-time a go. Again, as I said above, there's always options :) glam - Thanks for the info. It's good to know that we can change our workload should we need to. If it comes up I'll be sure to check pre-requisites and make sure I'm doing the units in the right order :) In other news, I've enrolled in the units!! I'm super excited now. (Not so excited to see the booklist and prices when it comes out hahaha)

anyone here an EN who will be applying for credit for the first yr subjects? im trying to figure out how this should work...do you have to enrol in the subjects first and then apply for the credit...or do you just enrol in the 2nd yr subjects and apply for the credit at the same time...any ideas? i'll have to speak to CDU monday i think...not sure what order i should be doing this in :)

Jules there is agreed credit for hospital trained ENs & cert IV or diploma ENs. So you don't have to apply for the credit. I got an email a couple days ago to say my credits had been processed and a list of the credited units. As long as you have provided your proof of registration when you applied, it should all be processed automatically.

thanks Lulu, but i only just finished my EN course in Nov 2010- so do have to send my transcripts and apply for credits for the 8 subjects in first yr. it mentions ENs applying for the credit on the form that i was sent by someone at CDU. you must have been credited automatically because you already have registration? whereas my rego only came thru a week ago. im just not sure if i have to enrol in the subjects first, but im kinda thinking now that that would be stupid. ive emailed someone at the uni who ive been dealing with so he'll reply and confirm, but im just gonna enrol in the second yr subjects now.

I did abit of reading and seen the SBI (anatomy...) subjects are running. Dont know if that will work with clinical timing though. Will anyone else be looking into summer semester ? I have just applied online for the course today and I too am extremely nervous and excited....now I just need to be accepted. I'm also working part-time and have a 1 year old at home with me, so if I'm successful in my enrolment I too think I will start out F/T and see how I go. I have 2 other completely non-related degrees and am changing career paths so fingers crossed!! Good luck to everyone.

Im starting at JCU externally and it says it will take 6 years part time, which means two subjects a semester.. but I want to do mine in 3 years. So can I study fulltime even though i doing it part time externally ... im so confused, I didnt know that the uni could decided whether you did it full or part time.

Hi KK I am employed as an EEN at my local hospital and usually work 60 - 80 hours per fortnight. I have applied to do the course F/T but will see how it goes. I have applied for RPL but still havent heard how many credit points I receive. Hopefully because I have completed the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing I can get 80 credit points. Is there anyone else who is doing this course that is a registered EEN?
