I am a mature entry student, hoping to be made an offer into CQU's Bachelor of Nursing in 2010. I have four children and would need to continue working part time whilst studying anyway, but when can I actually start to work as a nurse [if at all ] before the end of my degree?

Also, I have heard that some nurses get paid for their clinical placement time, would that be because they are already EN's and qulaified?

My end goal is to be a midwife, but in my home town of Rockhampton, there is no direct entry into midwifery, so I need to do the 3 year Bachelor, followed by the 18 month Grad Dip in Midwifery. Would I be correct in assuming that I can work as a RN while I am studying my Grad Dip?

Hi

I had the same question as you actually!! I keep getting different answers. I know that student nurses are apparently sort after in aged care facilities while studying and this may be an option. I have 5 kids single mum so i have already started putting my resume out just to get a foot in the door because I am competing with tafe students as well as uni students. I noticed in some states that on clinical placements students get paid. If your in Qld I don't think you do. Your uni will be able to tell you. I have discovered my uni liason officer in the health department is full of knowledge to do with jobs, scholarships etc and I make sure I stay in contact with her even before I begin my studies.

Wishing you good luck with your studies.

I asked QUT Brisbane about this, and the response was there is no payment during their clinical placements for their Bachelor of Nursing degrees, however students can approach hospitals and ask about any work available.

Also: Queensland Health list nursing rates for undergraduates (http://www.health.qld.gov.au/hrpolicies/wage_rates/nursing.asp, 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates) so it looks like there are options for hospitals to employ undergraduates prior to registration.

I'm in a similar boat, looking to get entry as a mature student. No kids at the moment but planning a family, and have a mortgage. It would definitely make things easier to get work in the same field as study, that's for sure!

Many thanks for the replies. If I am successful in gaining a place in the program, it looks like there will be a couple of options available to generate some income.
Thanks again,
Tracey

In most nursing courses, if you finish up 2nd yr, you can get certificate for EN (You need to check the course curriculum, Some are not offering...)
Also, I think you can work as AIN in aged care if you enrolled in nursing school.

Good Luck
