Hello everyone,

firstly thanks for useful forums and helpful members.

As per the heading, I decided to change my career path and would like to start as soon as possible.

By browsing on the internet I've found too many institutions and now I feel a bit confused.

Should I start with a Certificate III or IV or can I go straight to Diploma course?

I'm looking at both online and onsite studying preferably around Melbourne area and I prefer doing it part time.

Thanks in advance for help.

HI,

I'll try and answer some of your questions. I think you would start at the Diploma as I think the Cert IV is longer going to be offered, (I think).

I am looking at starting ASAP in Melbourne also. I am applying mid year for ACU Diploma, I spoke with them today. They said the info will be on their website in early April and the course starts in June. They offer both part time and full time. They have their own entrance test (not through vetassess) that you will need to sit.

I am also applying for RMIT, their midyear intake open on May 1st. You will need to get onto the Vetassess website and book a test now. Their midyear intake is for the City campus.

The other one I have looked at today is the ANMF, in the city, they offer the Diploma and it starts in June or July. It is for part time only (2 days per week). They also need you to sit a vetassess test ( I booked mine today for ANMF)

I am applying for all in case I don't get into my first choice of ACU.

Online is difficult unless you are willing to travel interstate for placements and workshops etc as I don't think there is any online diploma of Nusring based in Victoria.

Hope I was of some help and gave you some ideas.

Let me know how you go.

Thanks very much for help.

In the mean time I thought of going straight to Uni Degree since I already have an Advanced Diploma (not in health area).

I looked at Monash, I could join their MAP (Mature Age Program) for six months (it's free) which will brush my literacy and numeracy skills (there is one more topic I forgot what is it) and it'll allow me to be enrolled in the Degree program.

Their Nurse Degree takes 3 years so after that hopefully I'll get the qualification and find a job.

Ok forget the online course as now I understand that I must do onsite practice (right) but also I'll look for options to do the Degree part time if any.

What do you think, should I get Diploma first or go straight to Degree?

Why did you choose the Diploma not the Degree?

Hi,

I am choosing the Diploma because it suits my personal needs. I am quite happy and content to have a EN position rather than a RN position. I am nearly 40 years and will not be going into nursing to make my way to the top, I am just looking for a nursing position I will enjoy. I am looking at working in aged care, where alot of EN's apparently work in, so it suits me fine. If you want to do surgical/acute/specialist nursing I would go the degree. It just depends on what you want out of your career.

I may well go onto the degree after the diploma. It all comes down to what is suitable for each individual, I am taking into account my finances, home life, children etc...

If I was younger or had more time to study, certainly, yes I would go for the degree.

P.S

Monash is a great Uni. If you have a chance to do their program to get into nursing there, do it.

Thanks all for feedback.

I chose Degree because it's higher qualification than what I already have (not in nursing) so I can access to FEE HELP Government funding also going to Uni will give me more motivation.
