Hi All,

Im looking at starting the diploma of nursing course offered by the gold coast tafe early next year online and I'm hoping someone on here will be able to give me some advise?! A bit of background on my current circumstance first, mum of three kids ages 5, 4 and 2 and live on south coast nsw. My question is to those who are studying part time, how much time do you need to dedicate to study a week? The Gcit say 12-18 hours a week commitment but is that purely to study or does that include placement? Before I make a commitment to this I am trying to figure out if my circumstances allow me enough time to fit the course into my life without causes huge stress.

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!

Thanks Ebz :)

Hi Ebz,

I've only just started the Diploma of Nursing (in week 3) I'm doing part time.  The amount of hours they give you is a guide only - some people need more, some people less.  I know for me, because I'm mature age (45) and haven't studied for awhile, I'm doing more than the recommended hours.  These hours don't include placement.   With 3 young kids, I would definitely recommend doing it part time.   Also, there are 3 residential colleges you need to attend on the Gold Coast - the first two are 2wks each and the last is 1 week.

Although this is still only new to me, I can tell you I am absolutely loving it!  Yes it's full on, but I am so excited to finally be realising my dream of nursing.

Hope this helps

Thanks lainey, thats a huge help to me! I think I will leave my enrolment for another year when my second child will be starting kindergarten. Having 2 kids at home and studying might be putting too much pressure on myself :)

I have been looking at doing this course for roughly a year now but with 2 kids and full time work I have been hesitant. It's my dream to be a nurse but I have to work to support my family. Do you think it is possible to work a 36 hr week and study part time whilst being a mother of a 5 yr old and 4 yr old? Why do you need to attend the colleges? How easy are you finding it to study online?  :)

Residential Colleges are mandatory in this course - there are some exams/prac we do there before we head out to placement.   I can only speak for myself, but I work 25hrs a week and have 3 teenage children (so not as needy as younger ones) and I still struggle to get the work done.  I am finding I need to do over the recommended hours of study per week (especially for anatomy and physiology)  Studying online is great - I've had no problems so far.  The teachers are excellent - there are online tutorials every week and teachers are contactable by email or on the forum (or even Facebook lol)  you get a study guide and it's really easy to follow the topics etc online.

Hope this helps

I am 45yo, work full time (when not injured) and have two kids (8yo & 5yo).  I am studying part time and have to set aside around two hours a night to complete all of the readings in all of the units - up to 5 units running at once.  Study time per week is increased when completing due assessments.  It is all manageable as long as you don't fall too far behind (I had surgery part way through the semester which put me out of action for a couple of weeks - I never really caught up).

Studying online can be very flexible to suit your life, but it also requires some dedication as well.

I have just sent all the paper work (application forms ect) off today. I am really excited to do the course but scared at the same time as I have 2 teenagers whom are in high school one whom needs lots of help and another child whom is in year 6 whom gets home school due to a disability so I thought studying on line would be a great option and later when my youngest is back in main stream and more independent I can look for work in nursing.

Is there anyone else from the illawarra area that is doing nursing thru the gold coast tafe?
