hi, im thinking of doing a conversion course to take me from En/Div 2 to Rn/Div1 and am wondering if anyone who has done this can recommend places to study?

i know of someone who has done it thru CDU, and i also know someone who is not an EN, but has a 'sciencey' background and was able to get a years credit thru CDU so she is basically doing a 2 year course similar to what a conversion course would be. the second friend has loved it so far, has 2 little kids and has been able to cope although it means being super organised.

so am wondering does anyone else have opinions or can share their experience doing this thru whichever uni?? and how did clinicals work? were you able to do them in your own state? (im in Vic). and how did it work?? i cant really imagine what its like going out on clinicals on your own with no other students...(even though essentially your on your own once your buddied up with a nurse on a ward and sometimes barely see the other students till the end of the shift) ...but even so, it seems like you could end up feeling very vulnerable??

so far i 'think' it can be done via distance thru CDU, CQU, and maybe CSU...i know for sure CDU and have spoken to them, but im not sure of the exact details of the other uni's?

would love to hear other peoples experiences

Hi Jules,

I have applied for CSU and CDU for next year. I looked at CQU but I think they have a lot more placement than the other two. And CSU, I think they have a lot of resi schools. So far from what I've researched, CDU looks the best. I actually emailed the clinical placement coordinator today and she said that Victoria is hard to get placements in (I'm in Vic too), but they have done it, and I think they try their best to get you placements as close to home as possible.
At CDU, for you and me as EN's, the course is 4 years part time (2 years full time). I have heard a lot of good things about them. I am worried about clinicals, as I have a young child and a husband who works full time. I thought the same thing, it would be weird being the only student on the ward.
I know Latrobe does a 2 year conversion course, but I think that is on campus. Good luck!

Hi all,
I'm an EN in tasmania and enrolled in mid year at CSU - yes there are residential schools that I have to travel for but they try and group the subjects together as much as possible. I have just finished my first semester having done 2 subjects - next year I have enrolled in 3 subjects a semester and I still only have one clinical for 2011. I can do exams at my local university - i can do clinicals in my state I just have to find them which is good because I can work around my family. I work full time and with some strict organising managed to do fairly well. I only have one child who is 12 ( I have waited for him to get older) but there are some in my group with little one's and they have done ok as well. The support has been great with lots of questions answered in the first residential school - ordering books and material through the library has been fantastic as I live in an isolated mining town in tassie - all in all I am very happy with my decision with csu and looking forward to feb - oh there are no nursning subjects offered over the summer period which of course makes it a bit longer but gives me time to spend with my family and re generate over the summer.

hope this helps
good luck
