Hi,

I am currently working a full time job in transport but have always longed for a career in nursing but have feared that I would not be able to support my young children. Any suggestions to help me get to the next step and if it is possible and easy to find a job within nursing whilst studying.

Thanks

Hi Erica,

My suggestion would be Gold Coast Tafe (GCIT) they offer nursing through an online course - so you would be able to continue working and achieve your goal of nursing.   That is how I am doing it.  I can't afford to give up work so I'm studying part time from August.  You just need to be able to attend 3 residential colleges on the Gold Coast (2 weeks duration) plus do placement which you can do close to where you live.  As for the finding a job in nursing whilst you are studying - I'm not sure, but I'd say once you have commenced your course and have done some placement someone may offer you something.

All the best of luck!

Elaine

I completted my Diploma of nursing a few years back now when it was brand new via distance learning at Spencer TAFE based at Whyalla Norrie in SA.
It was a fantastic course. Challanging but the help and support from the Facilitator's was A1.
I received STATC which is a Government scolarship to complette the Diploma which took all financial strain off of me.
I had a nursing backgroud before I started but it is not something you do have to have to be able to complette this course. it's an advantage though.
They try and get you placemnts close to where you live. the first 2 placements, Primary health Care and Aged Care are very easy to find a place close to you to get your Facilitator to organise for you. The final placement, which is Acute, is harder to get but the Facilitator's will try everything they can to get a placement as clost to you as they can.
You have 2 times in the 1.5 years or 3 years, depending on if you are full or part time, that you will need to attend Whyalla. Or if they have enough numbers, they may put on a residential element that is closer to you.
Lot's of TAFE's now offer nusring via DE as well as being in classes, so good luck on what you choose. If you have a desire to learn and help people, then it's the right course for you.

Thank you both so much. I think next year I will start this course part time. Is most certainly the field of work I have always wanted to work in :) will be excited but extremely nervous.

just be careful of online courses, some offer a lot but you may not get the best education. if you work hard on clinical placements be eager, enthusiastic, look for things to do, talk to patients and ask questions you maybe offered a job on your 1st of 5 placements, we find alot of students are offerered jobs on completion but you have to want to
