Got a business degree, have two yrs work experiences in aged care, got cert. III in aged care, done human biology unit before. I'm in Melbourne now, will go to Perth in July. I know UWA has a 2 yrs Master nursing course for students who already got a degree in different filed, but it's on campus. I wanna study nursing while working, are there any unis offer external study or on-line study???

Hi-

I'm studying externally with Uni South Australia f/t and personally if i could redo my time i wouldn't of studied externally i would of applied for an internal Nursing course.

I found even with external i still had to cut back my hours significantly to keep up with the work load and more so i could get good marks.

Studying externally also may lead to issues with placement not being in your home state, i've heard good things about CSU and them managing to get placements in your home state however UNI SA have pretty much told me i will be in Adelaide for my 3rd year placements with are combined 4 months in duration.

Unfortunatley i'm too far into my course to now switch to an internal university in Melbourne without adding to much extra time on my course.

How to get a nursing degree while working full time, is really an issue for me. Probably I may try to study part time ( 2 units a semester) on campus, and work 38 hrs weekly.

Working 38 hours a week can take its toll on you. All the more so, if you have family to consider. I used to work around 25 hours a week, run the family taxi and meals on wheels whilst doing full time. It took a toll but I had an advantage, my work is 20 meters outside my house, so there's little down time traveling and etc. Because I owned the business, my times are flexible. IMHO the 38 hours with part time would be difficult. Because of my commitment, I missed a lot of my lectures but I made up by downloading lecture materials and going through them at 3 am in the morning. Also when you start clinical placements, its will upset your routine.

Part time can be difficult as you may loose motivation given the long duration of toiling hard and NOT seemingly going anywhere fast. Encourage you to bite the bullet and go full time, it will save you some heartache. Works better if you have Uni mates to support you through your studies and share information. All the best
