As a nursing grad - what's people's experience of agency work?

Which agencies are good? How to get in? What catches are there?

What should one be aware of?

Would appreciate experiences...

I can't comment on agency as a "nursing grad" - although I would find it somewhat daunting - not to put you off though!. There are many agencies out there, all offering many different incentives - more money, bonuses for more nurse referrals etc. Some nursing agencies deal mainly with aged care, but most agencies offer general, aged care, domicillary and rural placements, and some postings overseas. I have been with many agencies over the last 15 years. I have had postings in the Kimberly region of WA (had a ball there too), to community nursing. Word of mouth is a good way to ascertain how "good" the agency is, but bottom line is, if they find you work and pay you, they are all good. On the plus side of agency work, if you don't like a particular placement you have been to, great -Just tell the agency and they won't send you there again. Agency work is good for the variety in areas you can work, it's also good because you invariably don't become involved in the politics that are normally rampant in the workplace. Enjoy!

Hi MattOne thing I thought I would point out was a piece of advice from a preceptor on a placment on this issue. As She stated if u are the person hiring a nurse from an agency why would u accept a GNP who ultimatley has to be supervised when u could have a 2nd yr for about the same price?CheersMorgan

I don't know what the grad programs are like in Adelaide, but in the hospital I started my grad program in (in Queensland), I was not 'supervised' at all. If I had a question, or wanted someone to help with something I was doing, I had to ask. There just wasn't enough staff to supervise. So to me, someone supervising would be something completely new.

Hey There

Whilst I cant comment on the GNP from Experiance, I can comment from working for Nasa for many years. They do offer a great GNP year of work. Also just another suggestion, contact different agencys and see what they have on offer.

Most agencys offer a weekly pay, and bonus referal schemes. Working for them is great, I left agency for 14 months to work perm somewhere and now iam back with another agency Support STaff, which are fantastic, never without work, dont like somewhere dont have to go back, i get to pick E's L's and ND when i want. .

My advice if u want a good agency go Support Staff, but only cause I work for them, Just call soem different ones up and ask for there pay rates and get some background off them or check out there websites.

Suggestions:

Support Staff : Good

Nasa: Good

SMP: dislike

Prime: Ok

NurseBank: TOTALLY DISLIKE

HMNS: alright

them comments are based on both personally either working for them, or having delt with them in a professional manner, either when I have been doing rosters, or having to work along side a staff member sent from the agency

Hope this helps :P
