What I considered the roll of a nurse to be. How I'd handle a situation. Questions along those lines. Basic common sense stuff really, not scary at all.

Hey everyone.

I am looking at doing the Health Train test in October i'm just waiting for some info from them. I was just curious as to whether there are examples on the actual real test for the maths section, like in the practice Vetassess one, they give you an example with the formula and then give the questions?

Also, what are the medication ones like for those who can remember, cause i haven't really studied much on that as i have been concentrating on the Vetassess practice exam. But it would be helpful to know what to study ect...

Anyone know??

Thanks in advance, Katie.

Hey Katie80,

The exam at healthtrain is nothing like the one for vetassess. Healthtrain is basic common sense maths, no graphs no problem solving, no medication calcs. Just study addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and percentages! It's really straight forward. Also make sure you can spell because that is huge!!!!

There is a great maths tuturial on the Charles Sturt Uni Site, if you practice these you'll do great as they are the kind of questions that are on the exam. I hope this helps.

Hey alli,

Yeah I know I haven't been on here for ages, I've been too busy doing school work!!!

I'm really loving the course though it is still early days! Everyone is lovely and I am enjoying all the subjects except for one; Nursing Profession. I think that's more to do with the teacher though! So far so good I'm cruising and not really getting stuck on anything. We had assessments for bed making and sponge baths etc last week that was cool ! I'm finding everyone really supportive and caring and we all have a good laugh!

How are you doing? What are you up to in your course? How are you finding the work load at this stage? I'm sure someone said there were students from Kingston having classes at Edithvale due to renovations is that you guys?

We don't have a placement until the end of Nov, when is your next one?

Hey alli, I have a silly question for you,

Yesterday we started learning how to take blood pressure , for the life of me I can't hear the brachial pulse with my stethescope all I hear is crackling!! Have you got any tips? How did you go for your first time? It's hard to know if it's me or the stethescope or if it's something I'll just become used to? I know we will have tons of practice but I thought I'd get it straight away!

Anyway I hope everything is going great and I'll keep posting when I get a chance!

All the best Megan

Hey megan, Yep that is my group that is at edithvale atm. We are there thurs and fri. As far as the work load i'm a bit snowed under at the moment. I have an oral talk to do next thurs as well as my last anatomy exam. I'll give you some advice now.. don't leave work till the last minute. Do it as soon as you can.
I'm at about the half way point in my course, i am just about to finish aged care, chronic health & mental health. My next clinical placement is very soon, not next week.. the week after and that is a rehab placement. Have you found out where you will be going for your aged care placement???

As far as blood pressure goes.. i'm still no expert.. but i would suggest buying a sphygmo if you can (i bought mine from medshop) because i know what its like trying to practice in class with all that sound going on around you. Atleast if you have your own sphygmo you can practice a bit at home in the peace and quiet.

You may be slightly off where you need to be,.. ALOT of the girls in my class including myself had trouble to start with finding the brachial pulse. who's your teacher .. is it ken?? He should be able to give you some tips on finding the brachial pulse a bit more easily. I did end up buying a different stethoscope.. but honestly i dont think it makes a huge difference.
One tip Christina taught me (she was my aged care clinical placement teacher) to find the brachial pulse .. its a bit hard to explain.. but if u completely straighten the persons arm out... it should be easier to find with ur fingers... another thing chris taught me.. use ur actual finger tips... because there are more nerve endings there on ur finger tips... (argh... does that make any sense??!?!? lol) Basically make sure there elbow is not bent at all.. this will make the brachial pulse easier to feel with ur fingers.. so then u know where to put the stethoscope.. If you ever have chris for any subjects ask her to explain it to you.

Hope you can make sense of all that.

Oh and who have you got for nursing profession????
I'm just curious cause the teacher we had for that no longer works for health train.
Basic nursing care was an awesome subject. I really enjoyed that, learning to sponge and make the beds etc. Have u had many essays/assignments yet?? How r u going with anatomy???

Hey,

Thanks for the advice!

I'll keep having a practice with the stethescope, we were given our own to keep but apparently they are just cheap $12 ones and I don't know if that's making any difference or not. Everyone in class is saying they are going to buy their own good quality one. I will definitely give it a try with the arm dead straight though and see if that helps, I wish I had a sphygmo at home to practice with too just to get my confidence up! We have Bev for Basic Nursing Assessment and she seems great, I really like her. Simone is who we have for Nursing Profession, she is only new and our class is her first class with healthtrain. We have Jan for Implement Basic Nursing which I too have loved and she's a crack up! She had me in tears with laughter last week when we were playing around with bedpans and she was our difficult patient! We also have Maureen for A&P which is my favourite subject at the moment and I just love her too and I think she explains everything so you just get it! We haven't had any exams as yet, we have our first one which is for OH&S in a little over a week, we have a 1000 word essay due that same day for Nursing Profession ( On a Nursing Theorist, who did you do, Alli ? ) and we also have a class presentation that we do with a partner due the same day also for Nursing Profession. Like you I do try and keep on top of stuff and start everything pretty much straight away as you can see how easy it would be to fall behind when you're covering 4-5 subjects at a time.

Apparently our first placement is Aged Care either in Carrum Downs or Monash Gardens? Does that sound right? Which one did you go to? Any advice? It's only for a week too. I'm sure it will be here before we know it! The time seems to be flying by!

Anyway glad to hear all's going well with you and your class. Have you had many drop out since the beginning? We've had 3 in 7 weeks and I know a couple of other girls who are finding it tough, but hopefully they will hang in there!

Well hope you have a good day at Healthtrain today!

Will talk soon!!

Hey megan, i'm actually not at school today because our class is doing first aid and i already have my certificate :)
I havent really had any of your teachers, i've had penny for anatomy (we used to get cd's off maureen though that would help with a&p) , Maureen for wound care, Chris for aged care and chronic health. I've got jeanette (maureens sister) for mental health. Without sounding sucky i actually like all my teachers lol. They all teach differently but for someone like me who hasnt studied in 7 years, i find them all easy to follow and approachable.
As far as the nursing theorist i wrote mine on 'florence nightingale' , purely because she was the easiest to understand. Have you picked who you are going to do?? If you choose her i can certainly give you the name of the books i used.

We have had a fairly high drop out rate.. alot of people left in the first semester and then we lost a few more after aged care. We are down to about 24 people from 36 i think. I think alot of them just couldnt cope with trying to work and study at the same time.
I did my aged care placement at monash gardens and really enjoyed that. We got to do sponging, showering, feeding, bed making and "resident of the day" (which means u get to check their blood pressure, resp, etc) Oh and blood glucose levels :) Have you learnt blood glucose levels in basic client assessment yet?? And as far as the uniform for your placements... i would recomend a white polo shirt not a proper shirt..... Because when your showering, the steam from the water and the heat from the lights is incredible.lol just a little bit of practical advice..

I will let you know now though that even if you don't enjoy aged care stick with it... all your other placements will be alot different. I'm the last group to go out on rehab placement and all the other girls who currently work as pca's couldn't believe how much different rehab was to aged care.
If i can be of any help with anything let me know, i know when i first started i was a stress head lol.. still am... but i'm getting better knowing i'm at the half way mark of my course now.

Hey, yeah i use monash to borrow books cause they have a good selection. Health train have cards u can borrow to go and borrow books from the library. But i found it to be a pain in the butt.. so i just ended up paying and getting my own monash card. That way i can go on weekends and not have to worry about getting the card from the health train office.

Thanks so much Megan08.

I go for the info night on the 6th October (anyone else going?) so their test has nothing to do with Vetassess? I did the vetassess one and found it very clinical and strict. I ran out of time on the maths part so hence not the best score in the world and i am hoping to do better through Health Train.

Thanks for the tips i will start studying. Did you find it easier than the vetassess exam? Do they give you a little more time?

They do sound really good i hope i do o.k?

Sarbear: you would have to ask the staff at monash. I've never used the online journals, i've never really needed to. For all my essays i just use the books.
I haven't really found the staff at the library that helpful in the past, so i tend to steer clear of them and just borrow the books i want.

Hey Katie80,

The healthtrain test is not as stressful as the vetassess. I too ran out of time to finish the maths on the vetassess but at healthtrain you get heaps of time. Seriously I had enough time to triple check all my answers which was great because initially I did make a couple of silly mistakes which I was then able to fix up. You'll do great!

Sarbear,

I use the library at monash Frankston and healthtrain actually gave us our own library cards so we can go whenever we want. Alli is right the staff are not very friendly! I kind of just try and find things myself! I too haven't used the computers at monash, but I think you can look up journals. Perhaps double check though because I know there are limitations to our membership.

Hey alli,

How are things going with you?

The work load seems to be really picking up and we have our first A&P exam first day back after the holidays!

Am a little worried about remembering everything I need to!!

Are you back at Kingston yet?

Hey megan, yeah my class goes back to the kingston center in a few weeks after the holidays. I just finished two weeks of rehab placement which was soo much fun. I really enjoyed it.
Try not to stress out over your anatomy exam. They are never as bad as you think they're gonna be. As long as you've put the effort into studying you'll be fine. :)

Hi everyone.

I am going for my Health Train test on Tuesday night the 6th Oct. I am studying the Charles Stuart Uni stuff so i hope that helps and also that nursing site mentioned here previously. I hope i do well i would really like to do this.

Any other tips or advice for me? Also how much time do you get and if anyone can remember the Health Train test, how many maths questions are there? Hope it's not as many as the Vetassess one.

Wish me luck.

Hi katie,

I sat my test at Healt Train before . THe maths part was very easy It is about 20 questions. It is easier than vetassess . And you have more time to check your answer. In my test There were tow topics( If you had a family move into the neighbourhood who couldn't speak or understand english very well what would you do to help them?

2) If you were confined to a bed for a lengthy period of time what qualities would you like your carer to have? you must write about this topics . After that there were about 20 questions about the maths part. And don't worry there were very basic. After that The litercy part. I thought the test will take 2 hours. And when I did my test many people finished very early. May be after 1 hour and half .

Good luck

Mary
