Hey guys, I have recently applied to both Chisholm and Healthtrain for Div 2. I didn't get into Chisholm my score wasn't high enough which is ok as I didn't get all my questions finished on the exam so I thought that would be the case . I did much better with the healthtrain exam and got 94% and did great with their interview but I'm feeling anxious as somebody i know got roughly 95% for the vetassess at Chisholm and still didn't get in!! Why is Div 2 so impossible to get into? I will find out in 2 weeks if I got into healthtrain but my previous positive feeling is rapidly diminishing. I really, really ,want this!!!! I was hoping somebody out there might be able to make me feel better!!! Also does anybody have any advice on other options if things don't pan out? Megan

Hi There, I am trying to get into Div 2 as well before i get myself into the B.A Have you tried Vic Uni? ... There should not be a problem getting in to the Div 2 course via VU Tafe if you have passed the vetassess test. I myself have not taken my test yet ..it is on the 28th of May and i am nervous as hell, especially since i suck at math so much it is not funny but fingers crossed! hopefully we both get in dear :)

Hi Nalan, I haven't looked at Vic Uni. I live down near hastings way so that's quite a distance to travel and I need to work in school with my kids etc. I guess I can't be fussy though so I will take a look at their website. I did pass the vetassess but only got 61/80 as I didn't finish all the maths questions! I'm not sure that score will get me in anywhere else.I'm also not sure if I'm mentally ready to try another vetassess exam either. It seems so disheartening when you hear people missing out with a score of 95%. i mean what does it take?Anyway I'll wait and hear how I go with Healthtrain and take it from there. Good luck with your test, let me know how you go and what you think! Megan

sorry to hear about chisholm. Ive heard they are really hard to get into because they get alot of international students applying.. But honestly with health train the interview counts for alot... and you got interviewed by the owner of health train... so if she said u did really well.. You must of done really well. I got in with an entrance of 65%....... or something like that. But as i got told at the interview... u can be really smart.... academically..... but a dud when it comes to personality etc. Obvisouly i scored some brownie points at my interview.. otherwise i wouldnt of got in. All the best of luck and don't be disheartened by the chisholm knockback.. just remember how many people apply and how many spots there r in the course.... It would be the worst job picking who gets in and who doesnt.

I still can't believe it, all the waiting has paid off! I actually rang Healthtrain to double check I got in because the letter was a little vague! but all was well! I am really excited and nervous all at the same time. Anyway I just need to send off my acceptance and i guess I'll get all the other details later. Thanks heaps for your advice alli!! Would be great if we could keep in touch and compare notes!!! Megan

The course is being run out of Edithvale. Where are you doing yours? I don't have many details as yet except the days are going to be Tues and Wed. I think the starting date is June 30.

I am so happy for you Meagan! i sat my vetassess today, it was not as hard as i thought it would be....that having been said it was not exactly easy either i suppose. I think i went ok..can't be sure however. I would be so upset if i did not get in :( what i cannot fathom is...why it is so hard to get in to this bloody course??? there is a shortage of nurses ..you would think we would be welcomed with open arms...hehe oh well...if i do not get in life goes on, i have applied for the diplom aof community welfare also just in case i do not get into Nursing

Hi Nalan, great to hear you've done your test, it's such a relief when it's over!!! Sounds like you did really well! the waiting is pretty bad isn't it?! I too don't understand why it's so hard to get into Div 2. There is a shortage of nurses and you would think they would offer a lot more places. I guess it comes down to funding. I'm looking forward to starting at Healthtrain, sent off my acceptance this week so hopefully i'll get some more details soon. Mind you I'm scared to death now it's all happening!!! Well hopefully you get your results soonish, did they tell you how long you have to wait? And if you don't go as well as you would hope just hang in there, it will all work out!! Don't give up!! Let me know how you go, Megan

Hi there Alli, I just got all my info for Healthtrain today and am very excited! I start on the 14th July and need to get my text books over the next few weeks. I was wondering Alli if you might be able to help me with some questions? Firstly we have been given a list of text books we need to start off with. Apparently they can be purchased online through Standish,Prideaux & Pye , Elizabeth st Melb. Is that how you got your books? The four main books we need are * The Human Body in Health & Disease * Textbook of medical surgical Nursing *Tabbner's Nursing Care, Theory and Practice *Australian Nurses Dictionary There are also 2 other books that we need but not immediately, * Pharmacology for Health Professionals * Nursing Calculations Is it worthwhile buying these last 2 straight up or I can leave it for awhile? Also does anybody you know of sell second hand books or am I better off just buying them brand new? Another question I had was, there are a number of optional textbooks we can buy. In your experience were there any books you found fantastic and you would recommend buying? I know this will probably sound weird but what do you wear to school? It just says to wear comfy casual clothes. I live in my jeans is this appropriate? I'm sorry about all the questions but I havent studied in years and years and feel a bit out it! I really appreciate any advice you may have!!! Megan

Hi Megan, i posted my results under the Literacy & numeracy thread! I cannot help you with your books however as far as dress is concerned, jeans are fine! people even wear their tracksuits : ) i myself always worse jeans when going to Uni, and kept the trackies @ home. Also, i just recently purchased a basic anatomy & physiology book, that has revision questions at the back of each chapter, just to refresh and get some kind of understanding of the human body first up before i start the course ( if i even get in). Just an idea Good Luck!!! and i am sure we will keep in touch anyway xoxo

Thanks Nalan, I know it seems strange worrying about what to wear but I am a girl, priorities!! LOL. I have a medical terminology textbook from when I studied that last year and that covers all the systems of the body and basic anatomy. I'll refresh my memory with that to start and Healthtrain sent a list of good websites to use throughout the course so I might have a look at those too. I had a look on ebay tonight for some secondhand text books and I found some that were on my booklist so I'll keep an eye on them. Thanks for your help Nalan! Megan

Hey, as far as what to wear to school.... ANYTHING goes. lol
I quite often wear trackies... for comfort.. or jeans sometimes.. but yeah really as it said... "comfy" u need to be comfortable for practicing stuff in the lab and also sitting all day in jeans... i personally dont find very comfy.
As far as the books... the main ones i use are tabbners ( you'll use that for communication, basic nursing care, and basic client assessment) and the human body in health and disease is ESSENTIAL.... u will use that constantly for anatomy and physiology. I just bought the six books u mentioned but i havent even opened my drug calculations book yet... or the pharmacology book. So dont rush out to buy those, you wont need them till about 2nd year. And as far as the optional books.... i never bought them and dont know anyone who did... Just use monash library (peninsula campus) if u need books for research purposes.. (ITS ALOT CHEAPER) :D

WOOPS... forgot to say, i did buy all my books at SPP books in the city... u can order online or go in and buy them.. Watever is easier for you. And i just realised i have actually purchased one book NOT on 'must buy' book list... and it was for legal and ethics because we had an assignment. But you will have a different teacher than me.. so just wait and see what work she sets for you.. I mainly bought the book so i could use it in the future for reference... because legal and ethical is a pretty important subject otherwise monash generally works pretty well for me. :) Hope ive helped and havent confused u too much.

Thanks heaps alli !, I ordered those initial 6 books online and now I've got that out of the way.( I'll put those books I dont need just yet away for the moment) I wont get any of the optional books and just wait and see what happens or like you said just use monash. Also just wondering what happens on the first day? Is it straight into it or a bit of an orientation type day? I'm really excited but not sure what to expect ! Now for the really important stuff!! I think I will wear jeans and cargos, I find them the most comfy! Once again thanks for your advice and will talk soon! Megan

Hey, yeah first day is really just orientation from what i remember. I don't recall doing much work on the first day. You will get your course outline for the year and get to know your other class mates. Take your books along though just in case(because i started last august.. the memory is a bit vague) .... although the books are pretty heavy... so most of us tend to use a small suitcase on wheels to save our backs hehe.
The main books you will use in your first year are tabbners, the human body in health and disease and your nurses dictionary is very handy to have with you as well... because learning medical words is like learning a whole new language so its handy to have as a reference. I would imagine though if you are going to start any actual classes on your first day it would probably be professional nursing or basic nursing care which you will need tabbners for. Don't stress too much about your first day... i'm sure everyone else is probably just as anxious as you are about starting.
