Hi everyone, i'm currently studying my div 2 and have completed my aged care clinical placement. I am looking at applying for agency work as a pca but really don't know where to begin. I have no prior nursing or pca experience besides my clinical placement. Although i was a hairdresser in my previous career choice... so perhaps that may be an advantage. Can anybody recommend any agencies in melbourne (southern suburbs) that would take on students ??? And also what have your experiences been with agency work??
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you completed a Senior First Aid Certificate? They usually go over 2 days.

Your cv should state that you are a div 2 student, that you have a senior first aid cert, your clinical placement (include a copy of your clinical placement assessment and your academic statement to date). Mention that you are a hairdresser, and highlight what transferable skills you have from that, ie client confidentiality, good communication skills, work well as part of a team.

Why do you want to do agency? It can be quite stressful if you are new to healthcare, it's easier if you can work for one place and consolidate your skills and knowledge. Just send your cv to every nursing home in your area (at least 10) and to mecwacare and kinder caring (community) and to any other organisation you can think of. Find out who does the recruitment and follow up on your cv with a phone call a week later, and be persistent, call every two weeks or so, keep your name in front of them.

Good luck

Yes you are very right all the way priscillasmum ! It is very stressful with agency. I work very long time at the one place and when the RN comes from Agency it does become stressful for me, they have lots of questions, showing around where is what etc and by the time you show them it is end of the shift and they are gone and it start all over that same the next day and never the same Agency RN. While I hope there are others here that had more experience with Agency RN's, PCA's ??????????

Thank you for the replies. I came to the conclusion friday after talking with a few girls at school that i'm going to AVOID agency and try and get into a facility. I don't currently have my first aid certificate (not a current one anway... ) so i looked into that friday and am ringing tommorow to book in to do it. I was contemplating waiting until we do first aid at school... but thats another few months off and i think it will be a real plus when job searching. And yeah i will just do exactly what you said.. i'm going to write a cover letter and resume and send them off to all the local facilities and follow up with phone calls. :D Will let you know how it all goes.
