Hi There,

I have been told to start my career in Nursing by doing my Cert III in Aged Care. I do not need to work whilst at Uni (as most mentioned in previous posts, that that's why they have completed this course)

I have NO experience in the Nursing / Aged Care Industry and eventually want to be a RN or EEN so do you think I should do the Cert III just so that I get a knowledge of the industry?

Your help and time is greatly appreciated :)

Hi Danielle,

If you plan to be an RN, you might want to consider your route..Cert 3 is a starting point but to go this way with an objective of eventually being an RN is going to be a long ardous route. Check around to see if you current education permits you entry into an EEN course or enquire about traineeship. Being an RN is JUST the beginning as from there you can go on to do post grad courses in different fields and expand past being an RN. That's more studying to do. If your options are limited, then start with cert 3 and move up as you go. I have friend who wasn't sure if she would want to be an RN, so half heartledly she started doing a course for an EEN, she completed it but found that she would like to go on to be an RN. 2 years in a course for an EEN and then another 2 years to be an RN (graduate entry). She commented to me that if she had been certain of what she wanted back then, she would have chosen to do the RN course straight up (3 years) and save the extra year of study. All the best on your choice

Personally, I don't feel that doing the cert 3 would provide an indication or real EEN/RN nursing experience as the work and responsibility are different at all levels. Not to mention it's aged care, which is great if that's your interest. Knowledge of an industry is developed over time which you would get through either an EEN or RN course - it would just depend on what you are able to do. If you want to be an RN, I'd say - do the degree. If you want to learn more about nursing & the industry then talk to nurses and see if you can volunteer at a hospital. It's also a great way of networking.

Hi. I started off with Cert II in Nursing then Cert III then Cert IV now doing my RN's. I dont think my Cert III helped much. Its better to do the EN's or go straight to RN's. When i did my EN's apparently it is an advantage to have the Cert III. But EN's is getting tough. Have a look at this for the EN's. http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/nursing/en.asp But if you end up having to pay for the EN's its a bit of a waste because of how much you have to pay and then you have to pay for uni. But if you do EN's your guaranteed a uni spot. I think this sounds confusing but the whole process and decisions are confusing.
