Hi. It's glad to know there's nursing forum. Hopefully, I can get some advice.:-) Last month, I applied for 2010 new graduate program in South West area health services in NSW, but unfortunately, the first round did not offer me a position. But they put me on a waiting list. Does it mean I might get a position for my first preference (which is RPAH), if someone refuse to take it? or I'm on the list of positions available in hospitals I chose for application? No one really knows and I feel I lost the direction of my life. In addition, does anyone know how many percentage of people get into the program last year? I guess it varies for different schools, but I guess I just want to hear something positive. :-p Hope everyone here goes well in your nursing study and career. Please share your experiences regarding the new graduate program. Josee.

Hi, please do not feel frustrated! I am not sure you are internationals or locals, but there are a lot of places for grad nurses. Also, many applicants applies to more than one hospital, so there are also a chance you can get the position. In GNP, generally you will be rotated 3 or 4 places, so you can ask to GNP coordinator if you want to have an experience in a particular ward. Once you get into the program in any hospital, all staff try to help you, so you do not need to worry about. Keep your eyes on the job websites - www.medicareer.com.au (Medical only job site) - www.seek.com.au (General job site but big) Also, if you have any prefered hospital, please contact the GNP coordicator and send your resume and coverletter. If there are any vacancies, they will let you know! Good luck,

Thank you for the reply. I'm an international student and I found that a lot of international students couldn't get the position in the new graduate program. Is it only for my uni (university of Sydney)? or is it the same in other universities? Some of my classmates are so good, but they couldn't get it, either. I wonder actually anyone really get the public hospital GNP as an international student.

As an international student have you been in Aus on a student visa? I might be wrong but I wouldn't have thought you could take a full time job on student visa which would make you inelegible for a grad program - happy to be corrected on this, but presumably to be employed full time on a grad program you will need a visa which allows you to work otherwise they will not be allowed to hire you? Good luck with it - hope you manage to find something soon :)

As long as we can get the visa allowing us to work full time one month before the GNP starts, there's no problem. That's what the person in charge of the application process said. It's kind of guaranteed to get permanent residence visa, when we complete pre-registered nursing course. Therefore, the visa thing is not an issue.

Hi, I am from Melbourne so I am not sure if the system is the same - but down here we have a computer match system, you choose 4 hospitals, send in applications and have interviews etc and then the computer matches you to one - most people get 1st or 2nd choice. International students cannot participate, but after comp match is completed the hospitals release unmatched positions which they can then apply for. All the public hospitals participate in Computer Match but not all private hospitals do - they prefer to interview and offer employment before computer match. In Melbourne quite a few internationals get grad year in public hospitals, but a lot get grad year in private hospitals. I did my final placement in a very good large private Catholic hospital, and the majority of their grad intake were international students. So maybe you can contact the private hospitals and see if they have a Grad Program - good luck!!

I think being on the eligibility list means that you get offered positions in any of your preferences if there are any vacancies. I am on the eligibility list too, my first preference was also RPAH. My friend who was also on the eligibility list got offered a position about two weeks ago in Tamworth, which was one of his preferences. I still haven't heard anything from any of my preferences. Anyone on the waiting list got any news?

Story here in QLD is the same for international students. I spoke to a senior nurse HR director and he blatantly said that government hospitals are not making available positions to international students until further notice. This is despite the acute shortage of nurses. Lots of my Uni friends (international students) are without placements. Hope things changes for the better.

So frustrating! I've studied passionately in nursing and got registered in January, but I've been wasting my time without chances to utilise my knowledge and skills, only because of my nationality. I have work permission, too. I don't know what is wrong with me. I just can't find a way to get a job. Is it true that Australia's got nursing shortage??

Hey Josee, Donlt give up hope...have you tried applications to rural hospitals? Its a known fact that they are in desparate need for nurses, more so than city based hospitals. When you have some experience under your belt, I am sure your mobility will improve. Wishing you all the best..
