Was wondering what everyone did on thier practical hours in aged care, some people have said they did the carer role the whole time. I would have thought you assisted the Rn or En on duty.

Hi Suzalu,

I was with an EN for my 3 weeks, did not do any carer role. I haven't worked in aged care before, nor had ever stepped foot in one, however they did not want me to work as a carer even though they said I should have experience being a carer. I mixed up medications, administered insulin and did eye drops, it was really fun!! Great to get out of the practical lab and into the real world. good luck for your placement

From what I know on  first aged care placement you are suppose to work in the carer role. This placement is also known as your basic nursing care placement so assisting with showering, dressing, feeding, transferring etc.

yep, I did the carer role too. The other stuff can come later, in other placements. Being good at assisting with ADLs etc really matters - nurses can tell straight away who works as an AIN etc and who doesn't.
