Go for it...its appears daunting in the beginning but start working with like minded people in a group and you can leverage on each other to move forward. Pay close attention to "Blackboard", your online access to study modules. Often there will be one compulsory online test hidden amongst it and sometimes in your haste, you might miss doing it. That's where your group will help remind you or guide you through the maze.

Good luck

Hi paddy,

I am a 3rd year nursing student at QUT and a mature aged student.  After lots of feedback from my intake over the past 2 years, they have changed the nursing degree (effective semester 2, 2012) and it looks a lot better! More time for prac and less "filler" subjects.  I would definitely recommend it!

as a 1st year student, there are lots of groups available to make you feel welcome - i would recommend getting a mentor, which are 2nd/3rd year students who can guide you through your uni experience.  also go researching government websites and areas of nursing interest, rural, etc as they offer LOTS of scholarships to pay your way through uni - go to QNU, AWMA, any nursing sites and start participating in extracuriccular learning - i wish i could do my time again, because i would have done a lot more research about things that were available to me.  if you are interested in rural health, become a member of TROHPIQ. if you have other interests, jump online and see if there is an organisation you can join and get involved!

you will meet some of the most amazing people and truly make life long friends. dont be afraid of your tutors/lecturers - they truly want you to pass, so ask them/email them/bombard them with questions and interest as often as you can - start making connections now.

the only other piece of advice i can offer is to make up a semester study plan.  just an A4 page with assessment due dates, etc. it will make it so much easier if you can see everyday what is going on and what you have coming up.

good luck - it will really be a worthwhile experience!

Hi Paddy

Good on you for going back to study

I am 30 with some kids and started uni at start of year. It is a bit overwhelming, but typically 'mature age' as they refer to us are much better time managers! Write in your diary assignment dates in. Make them a week earlier than actually due. This wiLl give you that extra week effectively to go over it of you need.

I didnt aim for high results (but I was surprised) - I figured of I read what they asked me to read about, went to lectures and tutorials then it would all sink in..... It did!

I agree with gettin a mentor. Some unis sign you up with someone automatically. They will give you great insight into teachers, marking, where to locate what you need and things like referencing. Also check if there are study groups taken by students who got high marks in that subject. I am at ballarat uni in Vic and they have a session for subjects that typically have high fail percentages. It's 1 hour or so a week and run by a paid student. I found this really helpful for things like anatomy & physiology where a lot of it was very foreign (and written in strange language!)

Hope this helps

Good luck :)
