Hi everyone... would like some input and advice...
I am a 43 year old single mum with 2 children in High School... After finding myself home alone after a 20 year marriage breakdown, and not having "worked" for 15 years, Im desperate to get back into the world and hopefully to be specific, nursing...
I am not working and I am able to study part time at this stage.
My dilema is this... do I apply for certificate III in aged care or jump right back in and apply for div 2 nursing?
(I worked as a prospective nursing student for 12 months back in the late 80's... long story, but yes, I have life experience)
I ultimately would like to become a div 2 nurse but quite frankly, its the study that terrifies me....
I guess what I'm asking you all is... How different academically are the two courses? I realise nursing is far more detailed, but is it really that much harder than the aged care course?

I've rambelled enough... LOL... any comments greatly appreciated...

Thanks, Lx

I'm in a similar situation to you and I am doing div 2 (now enrolled nursing). I did the cert III in aged care last year and enjoyed it and decided to go on to nursing. I also started nursing back in the 80's and quit. So far I have found the course very easy and almost exactly the same as the aged care course. However, we are not up to Anatomy and Physiology or drugs or anything difficult yet. I think you would do fine, I have young kids and it's hard to get any peace and quiet to study, but with your older children you would have more freedom to study. Good luck, I hope you decide to go for it.

Hi Lee-Anne....I'm a 44yo male ,haven't studied in over 25 years. I did cert 3 aged care, disability care & HACC last year and found it reasonably easy. I have managed to score a place in the Dip of nursing this year full time. To be perfectly honest with you, the course is VERY intense. You must be highly organised, have a place where you can be alone to study with no interuptions, and have a supporting family.

You also need to be computer literate ie word documents (essays, and lots of them),research skills, surfing the net etc...There is HEAPS of on-line learning that we do, so disipline is necessary. The course itself is fantastic and i wouldn't do anything else, i would recommend you apply for both courses as Nursing is very difficult to get into. There are quite a few women in my class in the same situation as yourself ,some are struggleing a little and others are holding on....they do have plenty of family support & class support.

Please don't let me put you off... I say to everyone who wants to do nursing GO FOR IT. and believe in yourself...YOU CAN DO IT.

Hope this helps. Good Luck

Got my letter from TAFE yesterday... Information night in 3 weeks time and Vetassess test the week after that... all booked in and ready to go... I'm not fussed with the Literacy and Numeracy part of the test, but wondering if anyone has some advice on the type of questions I may get in the essay section of the test? Thanks for your listening ears!! Lx

Just an update... I sat the Vetassess test, got my results... 98% for Literacy and not so good 58% for numeracy...I was very disappointed in my math results but, well, I can't undo it now... all I can say is I studied really hard and did my best. TAFE aren't sending out yays or nays until December so I will just have to wait it out. I'm not overly confident in being accepted though on those results. Plan B... I have also applied and interviewed for Aged Care Cert III and HACC dual certificate at TAFE.... I'm waiting as I type on my YAY or NAY on that one... I am fairly confident this time around and can't waot to hear some good news... wish me luck... Lx

Good on you Lee-Ann, well done. Fingers crossed for you! Also don't give up if you don't get a place in this course, go with your back up plan, where there is a will there is a way.

OMG....congratulations!!! its just soooo good when yr 1st choice option comes thru...im so pleased for u. which TAFE r u doing it thru?? lol now i have an online study buddy..... im doing mine online. my course takes 2 years which confuses me as i thought part time was 3 yrs and full time was 18 months. oh well all that matters is that now we both get to live our dreams....as 'mature aged students' a friend who has finished her diploma told me something her tutor told her...... u r NOT a EEN student......u ARE a student EEN. sounds better that way huh?
