Hello :)

Apologies if this topic has already been posted.....

I am wanting to become a Division 2 Nurse with Medication Administration. I would have liked to start the course at the start of the year but missed out on the application dates. The only institute that is taking mid yr intake is Kangan in Moreland? Anyone studying there Cert IV there? & which hospitals did you do your placements? & do they have a good reputation? I would have like to study at ACU or RMIT Bundoora but will need to wait until next yr. I'm booked in having that Vetassess Test next wk however I'm not sure if thats where I really want to go, or are all Cert IV's on the same teaching level no matter where you study?

I contacted the Nurses Board of Vic & they advised me that there is now a Diploma in Nursing at the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) anyone studying there? Is it really worth doing a Diploma or are most doing Cert IV then taking up extra modules like intravenous etc once they become a Div 2 Nurse?

Any info would be greatly appreciated as I am new to this & very confused as to where to study.

Thanks :)

Hi GoNursing,

I'm currently studying Cert IV at Victoria University, and as far as I have been told, all of the Div 2 course providers will be changing their course from Cert IV to Diploma in June or July this year. This means that you can only now do the Diploma, as the Cert IV will not be offered. Diploma students will be medication endorsed and IV endorsed (I don't know if they'll call it that, but you get my drift). Any current Div 2s or current Div 2 students like myself will be able to do the additional units of the Diploma as a separate course, and I think eventually (by about 2-3 years I think) we will HAVE to do it in order to be registered as a Div 2 nurse. Oh and about that, Victorian nurses will soon only be known as Enrolled Nurses - just like the rest of Australia. One of my teachers said that we won't register with the NBV, it'll be a national registration instead. All of what I've said has been told to me by my teachers, hopefully it's all true and I haven't given you any false information. There seems to be a LOT of confusion about the changes.

Most of the university/TAFE websites haven't updated their mid-year information yet, because I'm sure that RMIT and ACU would offer a mid year intake. With the VETASSESS test, keep in mind that the test results last for three months, so if you do it now and apply for a course next year you will have to re-sit the VETASSESS (and pay another $45).

As far as ACU goes, I know someone who is doing Cert IV there at the moment and it seems wonderfully organised, but quite strict (which is probably a good thing!). VU on the other hand... well, we have great teachers, but it's SO disorganised. We get our timetable at the end of each week, so we never know when our next classes are until the last minute. We've been told it's because our nursing program manager is new, but there must be more to it, as some of the students of last year also complained about the lack of organisation. Lots of unhappy students. Although the teachers are lovely, I wouldn't recommend VU, I think you should definitely apply for ACU if you can.

I hope this was helpful, good luck!

Holly

Hi Holly :)

Thank you for response & for all the great info.

Geees, hope there is a mid yr intake for both RMIT & ACU as due to the new laws for government tafe fundings, if you have already completed a Diploma before you have to pay FULL FEES if you want to complete another one!! That would mean out for me, as I currently hold a Dip in another field. So for my sake hope the Cert IV stays a little longer or otherwise I wont be able to become a Div 2 Nurse, I think full fees are like $15K :( unfair.

However, I think its great if IV is included with Med Endorse as it would mean Div 2's would be more regarded as at the moment Div 1's sort of rule the field in that area :) National Registration is great news! but do like the title Div 2 for some reason.....then again I guess we would all fit in with the rest of Aust when Vic does get renamed as EN.

Thank you again & hope all goes well with your studies & becoming a Div 2!!

The tafe fees at VU, RMIT and Kangan are capped at around $900 for the year, if you study full time. I beleive ACU charge around $15K as they do not get government funding so if you go to the other government funded tafes it should be cheaper.

I am studying at VU and I do agree it is very unorganised however as said the teachers are awesome. Some of the good teachers from VU last year are now at ANF so I would recommend looking into their course.

GOod luck with your studies it is a very interesting course. I am loving it. Only 8 months to go
