Hi :) I'm looking into starting nursing mid year, I'm just really undecided as to what to study, I have 3 young children, 5,3 and 2.

Ideally in the long run I would love to do midwifery, so that means 3 years at uni, then go back as post grad to do the midwifery. Or just do my diploma of nursing at TAFE, which is only 2 years part time.

I know I would be able to do the diploma easily enough, where as I'm worried to do my RN, would be too much for me with the kids, but RN is primarily what I want to get into to be able to then do midwifery later on.

So those studying, with kids, what would your suggestions be?

Thanks guys :)

Hey Michplus3

I am a mum of two and am now doing my RNs though distance, I have been an EEN for 5 years and now wished I just bit the bullet back then and went to uni instead of tafe. Especially in my job where ENs do the same job as RNs. As long as you have plenty of support i would say uni but its what you can commit to time wise.

good luck :)

Hi !

Similar situation here , I start my RN tomorrow , my kids are 5,3 and 9mths.

I too would like to eventually specialise in Midwifery or Paediatrics, so decided to just take the plunge straight into RN.

Willlet you know how I go :)

Hi,

I have 4 yr old daughter too and 2 months ago I have to choose between Tafe or Uni. I heard early in Tafe that I get in into Diploma of Nursing then I accepted it and we start early( I think 2nd wk of February monday-friday 9-4pm) which I hate it. I have no time with my family and everytime I go home I feel so tired, then I have to cook tea and so on. Too many things to do and from mon-fri I have no time to study.

After 2 wks at Tafe I withdraw and decided to go to Uni instead. It's my first week this week and I only have 3 hours a day to spend at the Uni but its more self-directed study which as an adult you're responsible to your study. I found Tafe is more on spoon-feeding while Uni is like you have to research for everything, you have to do a lot of essay, referencing and you have to work by groups. But the good news is I spend a lot of time with my daughter and I go home not that stress, able to prepare tea for my family and able to study at night.

The decision really is up to you. But if you have any healthcare background or love to do research, you better off doing Uni. Good luck
