I got accepted in to Charles Darwin Uni - external!! Im quite shocked and still feeling a little numb and cant quite believe it. Im gonna be a student again....Im going to be a div 1??!!!! I am calling the uni tomorrow to find out about credits and what happens from here...im quite excited. I had been having a strange old time lately wondering whether maybe nursing was not for me and not feeling 100% on things....but now I have the offer I feel like its confirmation im on the right path..and I just have to push past my 'rookie' phase and come out the other side more conifdent!!! Ahhhh at long last...the wait is over.

Well done to you too!!!!! Wow its all so bizarre really....gosh what to do next...wonder when it all starts and whats going to happen next. I am interested to see if they will give me any credits for the course....UniSA were going to give me 18 credits so I assume I will get some from them. Hope so. I am going to hopefully be doing my meds next month as well so I will be very busy..if I get credits I will find it a bit easier. Argh its gonna be a big year for us!!!!

Congrats Keeshy...instead of holding your breath, it now time to hyperventilate...LOL. I'm in the same boat doing it full time and with 4 kids to manage I have already started reading my course materials yesterday - finished half of clinical placement (excellent book). Before long my glassy fish eye look will soon define my once usually neat appearance...argh! All the best to members of the student frat!!

Hi Gill and congratulations!!! Im a Mum of 2 and work for St Vincents and Mercy Private hospital in the city (melbourne). I havent been a div 2 for long at all really. I graduated in August last year and have been working since the beginning of October. I have my ups and downs but I do love it and I am really pleased to have been offered a place in Div 1 cos it makes me feel like its all confirmation that Im on the right path. Are you a div 2 also or do you work in a different dept of the health system? If you would like to become study buddies or have someone to bounce ideas off feel free to add me to msn or email me..it would be good to have someone in the same boat to refer to with things. Im akeesha444@hotmail.com Where abouts is southern health?

hi keeshy, I've been a div 2 since 2004, and did my med endorsement last yr. Southern Health is in the South Eastern suburbs of melb and covers hospitals like Monash Medical Centre and Dandenong hospital. I work at Casey Hospital which is one of the smaller ones in Berwick. Did you find out about credits for the course. I think it takes about 2 yrs for a div 2.

Ok so we arent close geographically lol I found out about credits....she said its 80 credit points. I am not quite sure yet whether thats right into second year or only a few subjects first year. Honestly not sure if I want to go into second year right off. Its alot to take in really...alot of pressure. I know if you specialise you get 60 credits cos you need more subjects...not sure about specialising though at this stage. I get my pack this week sometime so I will read up and find out more. What area of nursing are you in? What kind of ward are you on? How often do you work..how many shifts a week? Can I ask you something??...in your first year out...how did you find settling into the role of nursing...did you find it high pressure? Did you settle in well or find it a bit tricky? How long did it take you to settle into your work and feel totally comfortable? Im still teething right now so I have lots going on in my head. I think the main thing is I work 4 days a week and its a bit much with the kids...as I have been a stay home mum for so long (eldest is 8). Im considering dropping 1-2 shifts a week when uni starts anwyay to fit it in and to be home with the family more. I think that one extra day makes a big difference. I will earn less, but I need it for my sanity really.

hi keeshy, I worked as a pca in a NH for a yr whilst i did my div 2 then stayed in the same place for bout 6 mnths afterwoods so i had alot of work support during that time. I then went onto a ND in charge position in a hostel working with 2 PCA. That was a big step as you were the final step if anything went wrong. No DIV 1 there for advice. Stressful at times but good experience. I think the aged care gave me a good grounding before going into the uncertainty of unstable hospital pts. They can drop so quickly. I work on a busy acute medical ward, you get a bit of everything. Tried my hand at surgical nursing, definately not for me. I work fulltime (80 hr f/n) but i'm a glutten for punishment. Went back to work (and study) after my last 2 (aged 10,7,5 now) when they were just 4 mnths old. I'm not the stay at ome type. Love my kids but not for me. This particular ward I work in, fitted in well straight away. Another place not so well, I think it depends on your collegues attitudes as well. When I looked up study plan on CDU website for div 2 it seems you can do it in 2 not 3 yrs. Maybe not straight 2nd yr but close. I will do specialty if i can do summer subject and still get it all into 2 yrs. If not I won't as it would affect me doing a grad yr that yr. Would love to do emergency nursing. Sorry to ramble, hope this answers all your questions

Yeah im waiting on getting the enrolment pack cos that will tell me what the course credits are exactly and how long it will take based on my subjects. I called the uni the other day and she was very helpful and told me all the info will be in the pack. Im hoping it comes today...Im hanging to get it!!! All your work sounds very interesting!! I dont mind surgical but I dont think its for me. I dont dislike the ward Im on, its great for clinical experience, and I quite liked DPU as well but i dont think I will stay there forever. I would like to move on to medical and try that one day and eventually I would really like to move into education and/or work in a clinic for a Dr or a group of Dr's. Something that fits in well with family and where I can still have a good career. Thats down the track though. I would eventually like to become a clinical coach. Perhaps work for a university or a hospital and become a mentor for students. It would be very rewarding! Again that will take time. Im intending to stay in acute surgical for at least 12 months then I might move over to medical for 12 months and see what I like. I guess the thing with nursing is that you have so many opportunities that its hard to know what might suit and hard to know where to start! I think having more clincal experience with the Div 1 will help me find out my interests as well.

Hey Yeah I got the pack today.....I got home from work at abotu 11 last night so havent had a proper look. I have looked at some of the study plans though. Which ones do you haev to choose from...i assume the same as me..the cert IV trained? I am surprised how much credit we get.. It worries me a bit we dont do more a&p though....I am stressing a bit that at the end of the course I wont come out with enough education?? What do you think of the options? What are you looking at....2 or 3 years? Have you looked at the specialist subjects? I was thinking periop/theatre or community health but I think that might be a mental health elective and if so then im not really interested. So much to think about.

Hi keeshy, I'm hoping to do it over the 2 yrs. I think i'd like to do either emergency nursing or the one on alcohol and drugs. Mental health doesn't worry me, I find it quite intersting. No placements in first semester. Did you know there is a compulsory mental health placement. Don't worry to muh about the anp if its anything like my meds course the pharmacology and pathophysiology contain a big component of how the meds affect different parts of the body so you'll get a refresher then.

So you are looking at the 2 years with the specialist subjects then? Mental health used to interest me and the placement wont bother me, in fact it will be interesting, but I dont want to specialise in it I dont think. Community health in general as in district nursing or community nursing maybe...not sure. I will have to go through all of them I am thinking the 2 years as well cos 4 years...hmm i dont like the idea of that. Lighter load though. My prob is I was going to do my meds as well cos I really want to have it...but if I do 4 subjects per semester there is no way I can do both. Plus im going to have to cut my shifts back to 2 days a week. How often do you work? Those PSE subjects they have are mandatory arent they? The other SE ones arent but the PSE ones are right? Im glad we dont have to decide this in a hurry...we have til march to enrol thank goodness. Mind you I wont leave it that long but I do need to think about it longer than a couple of days!

Hi keeshy, prob won't do specialties, will just do the one thats compulsory in sem 1 yr 2. I'm pretty sure that one SE is compulsory. Did you know you have to apply for RPL for you div 2 to get the full 80 credit points. The forms on the site and you have to send it in with your div 2 results before you enrol. Also the timetable is on the site so you could work out the shifts you drop around it. Just make sure you look at the ones marked CAS not ASP. Let me know if you need any details I could email you my number. I could prob drop from fulltime to 8 a fortnight but I'll see how i go.

I figured i would have to apply for RPL. Is it just the official transcript we need to send? Im confused...what is CAS and ASP?? I am a bit confused by t he whole process to be honest...i have to look through it all properly and write out my questions and call the uni I think as well. Will be great to get your number...im sure we will have plenty to talk about lol

Congratulations Keeshy and Gill,
I have also been accepted for CDU and I also live in Melbourne, outer eastern suburbs.
I think I will be doing it over four years, with work and family it would be too hard otherwise. Have you heard when the clinical teaching blocks will be and do you know where they are held?

Hi Sandy and congrats!! I am still tossing around the options of ull time vs part time. I know I will be working really hard if I do it full time but I would have it done..whereas I might do better and be less stressed if I do it over the 4 years. Hmmmm not sure yet. As for the CTB's and placements all of the info is in the study plans and online. There are 2 sets of the CTB before 2 of the placements (in the book that came with the enrolment pack...the front section). You have to nominate where you want to have these before you enrol. All of the info is in the little handbook they gave us. Im unsure as to whether I need to worry about nominating them yet cos if I do the 4 year option i wont have a placement til second year second semester. I am waiting to hear from the uni about that. Dont worry..its a little bit confusing and i myself and having some trouble getting my head around it! Im going to make a phone call on Tuesday avo when I get home from work and get some more info from them. Sandy are you a Div 2 already or coming in fresh??? What study plan are you looking at?

Thanks Keeshy,
I have been a Div 2 since 2006 and have since got my endorsement, i work part time on a medical/surgical ward.
I will probably follow study plan 2a, but the disaster and emergency sounds interesting too. Have you ever come across a CDU student at work? I would be interested to know where the placements are held, suppose I will find out soon, but it seems like a long time to wait in the four year plan, placements won't be until year 2 semester 2!
