Hi Everyone,

I'll start studying Bachelor in Nursing (Graduate Entry) on February, 2012. To support myself, I want to work part-time as caregiver in nursing homes when my nursing course starts.

My question is this: As a first year nursing student, can I work in nursing homes? Am I still required to complete Certificate 3 in Aged Care?

Thanks.

You should be able to apply for PCA work as a student nurse after your first placement. however some agencies will legally require cert III.
Best thing to do would be directly call or email a few facilities and explain your are studying nursing and dont hold cert III and they may be willing take you on as you.
It depends on the facility.
Best of luck!!

Hi There I think you will fined that most places would like you to have cert 111 in aged care you may be able to combine the two if you can as some places will employ people if they have started i did my cert IV by correspondence and i know you can do cert 111 as well ,i did not fined the cert 111 difficult and you may not have to do all of it as you will do some of the moguls in your EN or the other way around

Working with the elderly is very different than working in a hospital but it is one off the best jobs i have had in my life.

I hope all go's well for you ether way

Thanks danii2011 and blondey.

I feel I don't want to risk not having a part-time job to support myself when my Nursing school starts in feb. By then, I will be resigned from my current fulltime job that is non-health related. So I'm thinking now of getting an external course in Cert 3 Aged Care. If only to assure myself of getting a job in nursing homes. I cant risk too much. I have kids to support.

I started working in diassability and Aged care in HACC and worked at some residential facilities in aged care and dissability through my agency and i ddin't hold a CIII. I started working in that when i started my degree in Nursing and have worked in it for the last 2 years now.

Thanks jw_86.

From the forum answers, I have gathered that many aged care facilities require CIII Aged Care, while there are others who don't.

So I think it'll be just a matter of requirements/preference for each facility.

It really will depend on the venue i found even when HACC or residential facilities are advertisings and they ask for a minimum CIII in aged care or HACC even without a CIII i was told i was desirable because i was a DIV 1 nursing student even in my first year and especially in my 2nd and was offered jobs.

Also a lot of residential aged care facilities hire students who do placement with them either, PCA student in aged care or HACC or Nursing students. Im just about to finish a 4 week aged care placement in a residential facility and was offered a job at the end of my first week and i know a lot of the CIII aged care students that do placement their are offered jobs if their good as well
