I am considering a career change into Aged Care and would be interested in the experiences of anyone who has finished Cert 3 and is working in Aged Care.

Did Cert 3 adequately prepare you for the work?
Was work relatively easy to find if you have limited experience in Aged Care?
What are the bits you don't like about the job?
What are the bits you DO like?
Do you feel you get enough support at work or is there understaffing?
What are the pay rates for casual carers as opposed to permanent?

Anything you can tell me would be much appreciated!!!

Thanks, Jackie

Hi Jackie.
I have just completed my cert 3.. Hopefully I dont have a long wait for my cert.. As I finished my course a fortnight ago.Been busy placing my applications in to various age care facilities and the public hospital system. I did a twelve week course through a training college here in Queensland, missed out on a tafe place.. Three people have managed to find a job out of class of ten people. One guy had been working in age care for several years, So he was snapped up on his work placement.. One girl mum works as an RN so she got her job.. The other lass has to travel an hour.. She has been given four shifts to start.. Her wages go on petrol.. by what I've been told, when I did my placement, working hours are between 25 to 70 hrs a fortnight.. Initially you are put on a casual basis, $18.00 an hour plus penalty rates for pm.. Not sure about permanent rate, Take a guess and say $16 but you get your holidays etc.. My educator did warn us if you are only thinking about $$$$ then age care nursing is not the job to do... Some of the PCs ask to work in the kitchen laundry to make up the hours,... I would say coming from Sydney probably a better chance of finding work.. Then here in Queensland, a flood of cert 3 students graduating plus OS students .. The future is in community care nursing as elderly people would rather remain in there home. This is what I Would like to do eventually this, as yet got to get me foot in the door. At the moment I am working as a volunteer so I can maintain my skills to gain the experience to find work . I enjoyed my work placement..Hard work physically tiring on your feet all day and running.. A challenge but oh rewarding.. Good luck if you go ahead..
