hello.

i recently finished my Certificate 3 in Aged care in Melbourne and then after that i completed 150 hours of voluntary work but still i cannot find a job. most employeers are saying they want PCA's with more than 6mnths of paid work experience.No-one is willing to hire me though. Can you help me, I do not know what to do now!

I know what you mean, I have about 3 months of paid work experience and about 6 months unpaid, but I still wasn't able to get a job with an agency because I didn't have 12 months of paid experience (and after working out costs of daycare, it didn't pay for me to work). Have you had a look at your local council? Doing home and community care? Generally start off just cleaning, but after about 6 months move into personal care. It would be one way of getting paid experience. I know of a few people who have done this, and now they actually prefer it to working in a facility. I'm just volunteering now on the days when my kids are in care. Hopefully something will come out of it all, but I'm not holding my breath. It's one of the main reasons why I'm looking into upskilling.

I was in the same position when I finished my Cert III. I did eventually find an agency to take me on and I worked casually as a PCA while studying nursing. Good luck, persevere and also apply directly to facilities instead of only looking for advertised work. You will find something, don't get disheartened.

Charity.

I graduated from the Royal College of Healthcare here in Brisbane, this college has a good reputation and quality teachers but still it took me almost a year to get a proper job out of it and only last week did I start a job with Domain Principal Group where I am getting more shifts given to me despite the fact I'm a first year AIN but I see it as a good thing as I will get better in a shorter amount of time and I'm happy at this job.

For a while there I took on just about any PCA/AIN job but they were not suitable for me, one nursing home only gave me one shift a fortnight and some of the nurses expected me to know everything which was ridiculous, then I took on a few short term disability support jobs which I enjoyed for a time but it is vastly different to aged care.

I certainly hope you have found a job since this post?
