After a long wait I've finally been accepted into a Govt paid Aged Care course. Been a long wait to find a free one as my finances don't allow for any savings. However...

I need to find my own work placement. This in itself isn't such a big deal there are plenty around though the hours are terrible, which brings me to my second point. I have two children, one who has just started school and one who is 1.5 years old. With the hours being as they are, 6am - 2pm, 2pm - 10pm, 10pm - 6am (seems to be standard) I just don't see how I can do it. I don't like the idea at all of dumping my children with a complete stranger at such short notice. I have no other care available. The only shift I could do would be the 2pm to 10pm. I'm finding myself wishing they could just move the shifts 2 hours ahead, an 8am - 4pm would be great for many out there like myself who want to work though are restricted by children. Excuse my whining I'm just frustrated at this last minute surprise!

I'm wondering if anyone here knows whether a placement with the blue nurses would count towards the 90 hours of work placement I need to do for the course? They zip round during the day looking after those in need. I'm hoping it will count. I tried asking my course providers today who knew nothing and my instructor won't be in until Monday so I'm left in the dark until then, they also seemed a bit annoyed that I had children and that I somehow should have known that the hours weren't great for single mums. I've called many aged care facilities in my city and none will take me unless I can work those shift hours.

Anyone?

To do your work placement I think you will have to do this in a age facility. Could someone mind the kiddies while this is going on .. I know it is a problem for mums. Once you have gained your cert 3 and gained experience community nursing may be the way to go.. But to be honest what ever occupation it is not easy for young working mums. Hours vary and so do shifts 6am to 2.30pm is common . 2pm to 9.30 or 10.30 pm At my two nursing homes which I work at we have a short shift 6am to 130pm 3pm to 8pm 4pm to 8.30pm.. my second nursing home 7am to 12pm.. Whatever you will have to organise some kind of child care minding. The idea is that they want you to work a eight hour shift to observe the work involved from start to finish of a shift..

Sorry there is more, when I mentioned about working an eight hour shift observing what is entailed, from start handover to morning staff, getting the residents up in that 1hour 30 mim timeframe. who has that shower on the day still have to sponge dress shave. Get them to dinning room . Organise trays for ones that are bed bound.. Breakfast over take residents back to rooms to toilet. Now we still have the bed bounds some carers prefer to leave till after breakfast some like to get them up before.. Once bed bound are shower sponged etc. This where your manual handling comes into play . full sling hoists are used to transfer residents from bed to fallout chair.or to wheelchair. when residents cannot weight bear stand on own, a stand up hoist is used.. Learning about continence pads paper work filling out incident forms, bowel charts, food and fluid charts . behavior charts. I am not trying to put you off just giving you an idea on what to expect and why work placement is done in a age care facility.
