Molly,

Can I ask, what course you did, to gain the position?

I've encountered a few AINs in NSW, who hold a similar position, but are largely unprepared for the responsibility.

It seems, that in Aged Care, especially those private empoyers, there are no real standards. Eg., the position is by volunteering for it.

regards,

Molly

I done "Manage Health & Safety in Service based Workplaces" for one week from 9am to 4pm. I am very experienced as I was before elected many many time as H&S Representative which no one was willing to do it. I have a large responsibility then and now. I am just wanting to chat with someone to exchange idea and suggestions from each other.

Molly,

Depends on who you did that course with, as to whether or not it rates anything...

Sorry, but that's exactly what I've found in the industry... willing participants, who get 'ripped off' by these so called 'training organisations', who charge 'thousands' to do training that should be provided at minimal cost, either by the State TAFE system, or by various authorised Health & Safety Services at State level.

A five day 'wonder' course doesn't prepare you for the responsibility, when the industry standard for 'safety practitioner' says at least a Cert.IV at the minimum.

Do a Google search for The Safety Institute of Australia.

Have a look at what they regard as the minimum training required to be an OH&S practitioner. It doesn't matter what industry you're in, you need quals. and experience to be the OH&S person.

I recently asked the EN OH&S rep. at my last Aged Care employer ( before I said, I'm leaving ), who is our insurer? She asked what does it matter? " Well, how would I know, that management's job to do all that stuff ".

Wrong sweetheart, it's your job. If you want to be the OH&S person, then not only find out, but get the NSW WorkCover poster, fill it in, and get it up on the OH&S notice board, before I call WorkCover, and advise them of the 'breach' of legislation.

So, after some 15 breaches of the OH&S Act of NSW, and without the full cooperation of the employer, I walked. Plently of other jobs around with my training and experience.

regards,
