Hello all, I have just been accepted in the the EEN course at Greenslope with GC Tafe. I have just completed my Cert 111 in Hom,e and Community Service and enjoyed the study. Just wondering what I can expect from Greenslopes and would love to hear from past students and what they thought of the course?

I have just sent an application for the August intake at Greenslopes Hospital:)  What does everyone think of the course and the hospital?  What sort of things did they ask you in the interview?  How many people do they select for each intake?

Thanks in advance

Lainey

Hi Lainey

I have just completed my Diploma of Nursing at Greenslopes. I found the teachers fantastic as they have many years of experience and do work in the Hospital. Therefore the knowledge base they have along with your experience gained working on the ward is outstanding for your education. 18 months sounds like a long time, though by the time you feel as if you have the hang of it, you are a few months into it. I found not looking to the end of 18 months, but taking each module and working on that to completion.

Advice, well keep on top of it, get your assignments done ASAP and handed in. If you slacken off you will fall back and stuggle. The course is not easy, but if you can manage yourself and be pro-active in your education by sourcing knowledge you will get through the course.

The interview they want to hear that you are a positive, and have empathy for people along with the ability to listen to the patients. You need to be a team player, also a few of your assignments with class will be in teams. From what I have heard they interview about 70-80 people and the intake is 35-40 people. When I had the interview 2 other people from the Hospital also interviewed and they didn't get in. By the end of 18 months we where down to about 22 people, so the drop out is high, finance played a part with people dropping out along with other personal reasons.

Pre-study for the course to give you a bit of advantage, is get into understanding the anatomy & physiology. There is so many basic books that can be purchased, QBD has a few good books on this to start with.

Remember the course is 18 months, therefore you are on a 18 months interview to work in the Hospital. All the class have gained employment and will be commencing the Graduate Program starting mid May. Employment is not automatic for all, and they say this many times along the way.

I hope I have been able to give you a little insite to this adventure and challenge that you are attempting.  All the best with your interview if you are successful. I hope I have been able to answer your questions, and please don't hesitate in asking more if need be.

Hi SharonThanks so much for your help. I knew it would be hard work so no surprise there! I am up for it though. When you did your study, was it online through gcit or direct through the hospital? Was the VET - HELP available for tuition fees? That is a high drop out rate!! I see you did a cert III in community service first - do you think this gave you an advantage when selecting? I have a cert IV but it is in education. Can you give me the names of a couple of books from QBD that would give me a good start? GCIT recommended that I apply direct through them also so if I miss out on a GPH place I can still do it - just have to nominate for my placement. She said if I wait til end of june and miss out, the likelihood would be that here would be no places left. Thanks again.

For some of the subjects my Cert III in Comm Ser did help though over all not much, say 5%. Hospital and Community are very different. I would suggest GPH over TAFE as you have more hours on the job training on the wards and the GPH class is smaller. All was done onsite at GPH, we didn't attend GC Tafe at all.

As for books Anatomy & Physiology made Incredibly Easy, this was bought through Allmedic Books at Stones Corner 3394 4949. Anatomica, The complete Home Medical Refernce $40 from QBD. (this book has good information abouty cells and breaking it down, along with a lot of diagrams) Sometimes I found the books that you need for class have too much information and I like to break it down to very basic infor and then build on that.  I also found YouTube helpful with information and tutorials.

VET is available, ours was the first class to have that option.

From what I have heard a lot of the study now will be online so some of the subject matter may change thought A&P (Anatomy & Physiology) will not. They are always looking to inprove the teaching methods.

Hope this helps and just e-mail with any more questions you have as I am happy to help.

Sharon
