Dear All

This may seem like a bizzare question but its really bothering me. I really want to become a nurse but have a really bad retch problem, particularly with smells, has anyone else had this problem and does it get better with time? :-)

I am really hoping that you get used to it as I have this fear also. I start my course on the 4th feb and my greatest fear is dry reching infront of the patient.

HMM i was told to chew gum as this helps

Hi guys,

Well I dont have a problem as such with gagging but I do sometimes dry retch over things on the odd occasion.

However I was a bit nervous how I would cope with things of a 'gross' nature in the field of nursing. I must say though that for me, it is something that I have gotten used to. I have gagged once but it was not in front of a patient and I ended up walking away and taking a few deep breaths and it hasnt happened since. I have found that over time I have gotten used to it and its become a part f the job. Sure I havent seen the worst of it Im sure but over time I think it would subside.

hi first of all i still gag when i smell gastro i dont care what anyone else says gastro DOES have a smell the best way to deal with gagging is to quickly excuse urself and apologise when u re-enter patients room and tell thgem u had a tickle in ur throat, ways to avoid gagging with smells is to put vaseline just above ur top lip sniff mint or eucyltpus b4 entering room or for women wear a scented lip gloss

My biggest fear was faeces and so on the very first occasion I was confronted with this the Carer I was working with offered to clean up for me . I refused and I am glad I did because I continually kept with the thought of the cleanliness of the resident first and foremost. I have never looked back and boy sometimes thats hard but part of the job.

Good Luck
