im about to start my diploma of nursing course and read that a background police check was required for later purposes. now u know when ure young and stupid n u do crazy things that u later on regret sa badly.. well.. i was 18 yrs at the time and was recorded for a stealing offence. i wasnt convicted as the judge considred my young age and it was the first time i had done something illegally. im worried this would show up on the police check and i dont think ppl would want to hire some1 with a 'criminal' history. im afraid this would effect my diploma and my nursing career.. help? is there any way out?

Hi there bbcat258,

there's not much you can do about it I'm afraid. You should get a police check done for yourself, only costs about $40 and see what your report shows.

It will probably show the charge and no conviction recorded and will also show your age at the time. I know that organisations do take into account age at the time of the offence and the time since the last offence occurred.

Good Luck

I would do what darren suggested, and firstly get a police clearance done to see what it shows, you will most likely need one for your placements anyway, so it wont be a waste of money.

I had a DUI charge from when i was young and stupid, and spent a lot of time worrying about this in 1st year uni. I ended up firstly ringing my university, to check that it would be okay to do my nursing placements (as these require a police clearance), and second of all i think i rang the nurses borad of SA maybe? can't quite remember. But everyone informed me that it was fine as it wouldn't affect my job, and it was more to do with people convicted of assualt and rape things like that, anything that could possibly put someone vulnerable (ie children, the elderly) at risk.

Good luck, i would think you'd be fine, but best to double check so as you can relax.

I would put your police check in and like the others said see what happens. We were told that if you did have some record it wouldnt necessarily exclude you from placements. It would depend on the offence and the facility you were attending.
I am sure something that happened that long ago should not matter too much.
Good luck with it all
