Hi everyone,

I'm new on this. As you can see on the subject i am yet to find a new grad place in a program and i need some comforting words to tell me what my options are because at the moment i find it shocking that the hardest part about having a career in nursing is getting a job! i thought there was a shortage! If anyone has any idea as to what i can do other than wait it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Paula,

Sorry to hear about your prediciment :( You have not said which state you are in, but in Vic there was quite a few unmatched grad positions on here: http://computermatching.pmcv.com.au/index.cfm so maybe a similar list exists where you are living?

Fingers crossed for you.
Ian.

I missed out because I only applied for 1 but didn't get it. I was concentrating on my final prac because I failed one and was worried I would fail it again so didn't have time to apply. However I found that through the extra prac I got and the high expectations they had, I feel that I could work in a sub acute area quite competently. By the end of my 10 weeks (2 pracs) I was planning all care, giving IV medications, blood transusions, pre and post op care, admissions, discharges, transfers etc, without prompting. This was in a busy orthapedics ward in a public hospital. My buddy nurse for the second prac said I did very well and that when she did her final prac she wasn't allowed to do anything. I am going to find work through a nursing agency in Melbourne that informs the hospitals/nursing homes that you are a new grad. But it is up to the grad to know if they can work in that area and become familiar with policies etc. These jobs could be short term or long term. I will work in hospitals that have a team nursing approach which means there is usually someone with you.

Hi Paula

I graduated in 2008, got into a grad program but left due to the work load, hours and general incompatibility with family and full time shift work. I joined a nursing agency as a new grad and have had no trouble getting shifts in hospitals. I know that everyone says you must do a grad program, but I have not found it an issue. The agency tells the hospital that you are new and they then make the decision. I have been refused a shift once! Check out some nursing agencies, they are quite helpful and one I know in Melb has a grad program through the agency. Good luck!

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone knew of or are working with any agencies in Melbourne that take new grads?

I've seen alot of advice on here about grads doing agency work if they haven't been successful in finding a grad year or chose not to undertake one...

I've been trying to find agencies that accept grads but so far no luck...they are all saying you need a least one year acute experience.

Also, grads who've done agency, what was your experience like?

Thanks!
