I have currently applied for BN Distance Ed through CQU Rockhampton F/T, however I'm wondering if maybe I should have applied for P/T on campus. I have a young family but only work part time so I'm hoping that I'll have enough hours a week to keep up....and I'm also worried about how doing it all on my own is going to be, obviously it is easier to ask questions when you are in a class room...

Hi Leishy , You can always enrol in less subjects for the term . Like 3 instead of 4 or 2 even ? Im flex and have never felt alone . There are a lot of other flex students in the same boat and you will meet others at res school or in the forums . You can phone or email the lecturer's anytime you have a question ! Have fun its a great course ....I started this year ...

Hi Leishy, You don't need to do 4 subjects in a semester. You can swap between FT/PT and even between flex and on campus. CQU offer subjects in semester 3, so that gives you the chance to spread the load across the year. Good luck with it. Dave

I'm only going to do one subject (Health & Behaviour) as Christmas could be busy! Are you doing any subjects over S3?

I'm going to do Foundation of Nusing Pratice (49) & Professional Communication for Nurses (52). I'm trying to navigate my way around the res schools as well. Although I only have to travel from Brisbane so it's not so bad.

I normally stay in Mooloolaba and travel up. Hopefully I'll get to the res school that takes place over the weekend. That way I don't have to take so much time off work!

Hi Leishy, It depends on what courses you do and if you are part time or full time. I'm doing it part time and in general you can count on going to res school once a semester. The res schools range from 1 to 3 days. The link below shows all the res schools for each campus. http://handbook.cqu.edu.au/Handbook/schools.jsp I hope this helps. Dave

Hi, I'm looking to study this course starting mid semester. I've just got a few questions and hoping someone on here might be able to help me. A bit of background about me, I'm 30 and resigning from a full time career to take up nursing. I have no children or commitments. Does anyone know where the summer semester residential school schedule can be found, I can only see the dates for semester 1 and 2r res school? I'd like to know if anyone has attempted studying 5 subjects per semester with this course via distance and if so how they found it? Has anyone been able to complete their practical over the summer break? Has anyone studying this course via distance completed their practical placements in Brisbane? I'm not sure when this course started running via distance, but has anyone completed it and gone on to practice nursing? How have they found the transition? Have they experienced any issues? Has anyone completed a semester or year of this course and then transferred to QUT or another university, did you have any issues subject transfer and credits? Apologies for bombarding with questions, just trying to weigh up all of my options and make a decision on the best course for me. Appreciate any guidance, thanks in advance Coco

CoCo, Sounds like you are tossing the idea of Distance Learning...Good choice. There are some things that will make a difference - a GOOD clinical placement can result in you gaining employment post graduation. The problem is currently new graduates are finding it hard to secure jobs because they lack experience and Graduate Nurse Programs positions are very limited in numbers as compared to 3 years ago. Just because you choose FT studies in say QUT/UQ or Griffith, it does not mean that you must religiously attend lectures and tutes. I for one skipped more than 70% of my lectures and tutes and studied at home, however I found that I could always access lecturers and resources easily when the need arises (I am an Ex QUT student). QUT has very strong links with hospitals like The Prince Charles hospital, RBWH, Greenslopes, Mater and Ipswich hospitals. I believe that this has given QUT a slight advantage in placement offers. However that's beside the point....I am getting off track. The biggest headache now is securing work post graduation and the most common route is to apply and hopefully gain acceptance into a Graduate Nurse program (GNP). But because positions are limited, the bulk of graduating students will miss out and will have to find their way in the private sector or start their careers as an RN without GNp support...nothing wrong with that....GNP is a bit of a glorified hurrah thingy...lol. If you are not prepared to uproot from Brisbane and go regional to chase a GNp position then you will need to work hard at making a good impression with NUMs and CNTs in your clinical placements, they can improve your odds of securing work as an RN but hitting the floor running. Good luck Coco.
