Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me, I'm currently studying my second year of nursing, I have always wanted to be a midwife but I was told I would be better off doing nursing and then doing the post grad course in midwifery. However, I was wondering, if I go straight into the post grad course after my nursing degree would my nursing degree be wasted, I suppose what I am ultimately asking is, is the GNP a requirement to working as a nurse. For instance, if I finish my midwifery training and find there are no jobs would I be able to work as a nurse until I found a midwifery position? I'm sorry this is so long and confusing.

If you want you can always do a GNP after your mid training, but it is not a requirement to work as a registered nurse but it is a good idea to start work with the support offered by a quality GNP.You will have an advantage over direct entry midwives as you will end up with more flexibility in your career which may include the ability to travel/work in the country as there is always jobs for nurses in most places in Aust or O/S.Having said this you should not have too much difficulty finding employment as a midwife either.Good Luck and I hope this helps.Michael

Hi emmy,

I was also thinking of this, with the plan always to post grad midwifery as soon as I could.  Since doing nursing though I have found many areas that I'm intersted in as well (not to say you will too - I totally understand).  Also, I have looked at all the post gard nourses in places I would like to go around Australia, and most of then seem to want at least 1 year of clinical expereince - have you found this also?  Do you know of any courses out there that will maybe allow me to work as an RN and do a post grad dip in midwifery art time over two years??

Hi Kerry UNISA do a post grad midwifery course that you can apply for after you have completed your nursing degree. You can do it full time over one year or part time over two. Flinders uni also has a post grad midwifery course. Both of these uni's are in South Australia. Hope this helps.

Hi there,

I am currently an AIN on a maternity ward and I have just found out that my uni (ACU) will be offering post grad Mid to grad RNs straight out of uni. I was going to apply as soon as I can but have decided to try and secure a GNP somewhere for next year (I am trying to get a maternity rotation at my work and at another hospital too)as I feel that I want to brush up on my clinical nursing skills and become the most competent nurse I can be before focussing on my intended speciality. I hope that helps.

Hi all

When i applied to do nursing, I found out about Latrobe uni's B Nursing/Midwifery. Its a 4year degree and you overload your studies (ie 5 subjects instead of 4 per semester) and most of the prac is midwifery. However I didnt have the money to move to Melbourne so I just stayed up here in Qld.

At the RCNA Nursing Expo this year, JCU and ACU told me that I could go straight into post grad mid as soon as I'd finished my RNs degree, even though I've always been told that you need at least 1years clinical experience.

However I need to leave study for a while since Ive been at uni for 6yrs (B primary education for 3yrs and quit coz that has even less prac than nursing!) and need to start earning some money to pay off my HECS debt lol.

I had considered doing a grad program next year at St Vincents and mercy private in Melbourne since you can do a rotation in midwifery, but I applied to late plus it would be expensive to move there wtihout any financial backing.

But I intend to do my midwifery in a year or so,...get all my clinical skills sorted out and stuff first and then concentrate maybe part time study. I know that you get to work as a student midwife for say 2 or 3 days and get paid for 1 or 2 days, depending on the hospital and uni you do it through which is really good....why cant they do that with BN!!!

My mentor is a midwife and it seems really interesting. I dont want to work in NICU or Special Care Unit though.
