Hi All,
I am planning on starting a bachelor of nursing in 2013 (I know sounds so long away!) once I have got my residency (Im from the UK) on a CSP.
Thanks to this forum and various websites Im getting pretty clued up on what I need to do and what options I have re. courses.
As moneys going to be very, very tight for my partner and I once I start this course I was just wondering what the options are with part time study - is this something that is an option with the bachelor, or is it just with the diploma? Just so I could continue to work a fair amount whilst studying.
If I did do this part time, would it take 6 years instead of 3?
Any experience or feedback would be appreciated!
Thanks
D :)

DaisyD,

There are plenty of unis that offer a part-time option. You can do most of the study external and download the lectures. How long it takes depends on how many courses you take each semester. You can utilise the 3rd semester to speed up the process. Good luck with the move from the UK. I did it 7 years ago and it's been great!

Hey DaisyD :)

I'm studying part time, my course is going to take 4 years with doing either 2 or 3 subjects at a time. Make sure you look at the prerequisites for every subject and create an overall timeline plan if you want to go part time - otherwise you can find yourself with big delays while you wait for a subject to come around which is a prerequisite for other subjects :-(

I used to go to CQU and they have lots of options for studying over summer :-)

Best of luck!

Hi,

Thank you both for your responses.

So how does it work, do you have a set amount you can study each year, or can you pick subjects depending on how much time you have avaliable?
Anything ive seen online says it takes 6 years to qualify if you do part time, mehwantscookies how have you managed to get it covered over just 4 years?

I am based in Melbourne so am looking at applying to La Trobe, RMIT Bundoora or Deakin. Those 3 seem a good option for a mature age with no VCEs.

Thanks : )

Hi Danni,

I'm studying part-time through CQU. The 6 years is a guide and assumes you take 2 subjects a semester for 6 years and do not take any subjects in semester 3. You can take 3 subjects in a semester or take subjects in semester 3 to speed up the process. Some subjects have pre-requisites which can slow the process a little. If you contact the uni they will be able to map out a plan and show you how long it takes (based on 2 or 3 subjects a semester).

I hope this helps.

@Daisy, Some planning is necessary as not all Unis have semester 3 or summer school as they call it.

Some subjects are pre-requisites which you must complete before you're allowed to sign up and as such it can be tricky if you do 2 subjects especially in 2nd year because sometimes Unis may require you complete 2 or 3 subjects before you can go on clinical placements. So I encourage you to check with Uni and plan your moves, otherwise it could set you back another term or so.

All the best
