Hi

I am thinking of applying to do Div 2 Nursing at Mayfield Education in Melbourne and was wondering if anyone out there has completed studies at this facility.

I was hoping to complete a traineeship so I will be working a min of 15 hours per week & I believe it is 1 day a week of school. Anyone else who has completed Div 2 via a traineeship your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Anth.

Hi,

I didn't do a traineeship, but worked with people who did the Mayfield program, and was always jealous of them! They seem to get good support and good wages etc. Although this is quite a few years ago. But I always thought that if I had my time again, I would have done the traineeship.

Hi Claz403

Thanks for that advice. Wasn't sure of Mayfield because I had not heard much about them. Appartently they also help you find a traineeship in an Aged Care home. Think I will look into it.
Thanks again

Hi Anth,

I've just sent my application for Div 2 traineeship for the July intake at Mayfield.

I called them today and as I am not currently working in the nursing field, they said they can help me get a position to support the traineeship. I have three kids 3 and under so part time traineeship suits me great!

Let me know if you end up applying!

Hi Lissnz

I was thinking of applying but I missed the cut off for the Vetassess test I think the last one was 19/2 for the April intake. I have 3 kids under 6 and was thinking traineeship would be good.

Is there a different dates for the Vetassess test for the July intake. Also are you applying for the governement funded positions or full fee paying. I was thinking of applying to Chisholm part time for their July intake. Thinking I had missed the Mayfield intake.

Talk soon

Hi Anth,

When I spoke to the lady yesterday she told me to download and print the application form and send it in. Once it is received they will notify me of dadtes for the information session and Vetassess. I'm 99% sure the July intake is still open, I'm sure she would have told me otherwise.

I'm applying for the government funded position. There is no way I could afford those fees!! Where is Chilsolm? Is it in Frankston? I am way over the West of Melbourne - even travelling to Mayfield is a push! I'm probably going to apply at RMIT and ACU when the time comes (April - May). They do traineeships as well.

Hi Mel

Thanks for that. I have mailed my application to Chisholm Berwick (South East) today for July intake. Might send off to Mayfield for July intake. I also can't afford their fees so would need a funded spot.

I will look at RMIT not sure of where their campus is. If I can travel as little as possible it would be good.

Do you think Traineeships would be easier or just the course? Not sure what to do.

Cheers

Hi Anth,

I am now looking at a traineeship through Apprenticeships Plus. I went to an information session last Thursday and had to sit a test. You do an initial 6 week "Introduction to Health Course" at the ACU then you may be offered a traineeship if your host clinical placement thinks you have what it takes!

A Traineeship is what I am after as I want as much clinical experience as I can get. It doesn't bother me that it takes two years. I can't imagine it is 'easier' than studying it part time as there are minimal clinical hours needed. I have spoken to many senior Nurses in the recruitment sector and they all have said that a Div 2 nurse who completed a traineeship will always get a job over a non traineeship entry DIV 2 with minimal clinical experience (course required). I guess the clinical hours equal the experience Hospitals and Aged Care facilities are looking for when they hire Nurses.

I wish you luck for your Chisolm application.

Hi Mel

I got a call today from Chisholm say that part time is only offered at the start of the year and did I want full time. Am going to consider it as she said it was 3 days a week at school comparded to part time which is 2 days a week. I am not sure what I will do yet as she could not even tell what days it would be.

Will look in ACU. Traineeship sounds good.

Keep me posted with you appliction. Good luck
Anthea

hi,

my sister and i are also looking into Div 2 courses this year- mid year intakes. mainly at RMIT and possibly at Box Hill TAFE (although i have a feeling Box Hill arent govt funded based on previous years enquiries...but this year the website is unclear as to whether its fee paying or govt funded). both are unable to give any info till around April as to whether they will actually run courses.

RMIT is 24hrs p/wk full time (12mths) or 12 hrs p/t (18mths), so basically i think thats 3 days f/t or 2 days p/t. Someone asked about where RMIT is, theyre in Bundoora, so North East.

I know everyone has their own opinion on it, but we arent really keen to do traineeships as in general the money is not great, and its a hard slog doing a traineeship in a nursing home. it would be great if the traineeship was in an acute setting though. a few years back i saw an ad for one of the city hosp's who were wanting applications for Div 2 traineeships.......but have never seen it again unfortunately. ive worked in aged care previously as a PCA (was studying Div 1 at the time but had to withdraw after 1st year for personal reasons) so im not really interested in going back into aged care (although im well aware you have to do placements in aged care for the course - which is fine). would probably consider it if i ever heard again of an acute setting traineeship- that would be fantastic.

Michelle, congrats on getting into the course!

cheers, Jules

Hi there

Michelle congratulations on getting into Mayfield. What was the Vetassess test like. Did it have the droplet rate question on it. I have been told that they have got another intake in July for traineeships and I was considering that, but I can only afford the funded spots at Mayfield. Is Mayfield finding you a job.

Jules I have applied to Chisholm fulltime and the said it was 3 days a week but do you know how much out of school study is required for RMIT full time? I am still deciding if I can fit everything in (school, Kids and work).

Cheers

Anth,

no im afraid i dont know how much out of school hours are required.

but i do know that i think the p/t option is prob the best one for me if i do apply. its only a 6mth difference, and i just feel it will give a bit of extra breathing space in general for everything. in the bigger scheme of things 6mths is really nothing.

Anth,

just on the out of school hours....... dont be too scared by what the TAFEs tell you.

Both Uni's and TAFEs ALWAYS over estimate the amount of extra work you will have to do 'on your own time'. of course you have to be prepared to work hard and do any extra stuff thats required- but having done various courses at both uni and TAFE, its never as bad as they make it out to be.

Yes there might be times when its harder than at other times..... and yes you absolutely have to be commited and work hard all the way thru, and yes you have to try to be as organised as possible and use your time wisely. but dont let the '2hrs every nite' put you off too much. id be very, very, surprised if you actually ended up doing 2 hours of homework every nite for the duration of the course.

Hi Anth

Thank you i am very excited about it.

The droplet rate question wasn't on my Vetassess test, but in saying that the day i did my test there were TWO tests being done in the room. The tables were set up in aisles and each table next to each other had alternate tests so that we werent sitting near some one with the same test. The test wasnt too bad. I was confident with the literacy side of it and got 38/40 but the maths side i was a shocker with a score of 19/40 (how embarrasing) I knew alot of the answers but then i had about 20 questions left and 5 minutes to do it so i just guessed. I have been accepted on the understanding i will get tutoring on the maths side when the time comes, which is no problem for me. I havent done that sort of maths since 1991.

Yep they have got another one in July that is funded. Im not to sure if this one would be too late to apply to as you were meant to attend an info session with them and i think that they may have all finished. I am doing the funded one i wouldnt be able to do it any other way.

I know that they will help you get a job if you need it but i was so determined that i wanted in that i did some cold calling of places and found my own place to do a traineeship. The only thing is that they have to have high depenacy patients which i was able to find. I rang about 10 places asking if they would take on a trainee and the first 9 said NO then number 10 said yes so i was thrilled. I will be working 28 hours a fortnight, with the one day of study on a thursday. I have a 4 year old and almost 6 year old so that will be interesting lol

If there is anything else i can answer just give me a yell.

Best wishes on what you decide

Michelle

Hi again Anth

Was just thinking and yes the droplet rate one was on it. It was something like how many drops in a period of time if the packet held ..... and then you had to work it out. I think it was one of the ones i was flustered on at the time, but realise how easy it would have been now.

Hi Michelle

Thanks for that information. I have been looking at the Charles Sturt web site to try and brush up on my maths. I will call Mayfield and check to see if there is another info session for the July intake. Hope there is more.

Do you have to do all you placements at the aged care facility you work at or can you elsewhere, ie hospital and did you get the traineeship before you knew you were accepted to Mayfield. Sorry to ask so many questions. Were there many essays to write.

Have you already started work. Good luck with your course and make sure you keep us posted.

Cheers

Hi Anthea

I got the job before i knew i got into the traineeship, it was a case of wishful thinking and hoping lol. Im not to sure if you can work some where else or if it has to be in aged care . I know when it comes time for placements that i wont have to do the aged care part then , i will do acute care , mental care etc.

Umm essays from what i can remember there was a 3 part one on advising some one to give up a bad habit and some general questions. The other part was a nursing questionaire, multiple choice at least.

There would be more info sessions later in the year , i just wasnt sure about the ones for April.

I havent started work as of yet, i have to wait until the traineeship starts but the place i got the job at is going to keep my shifts until then , which i am thrilled about.
