I have just enrolled in TAFE and been accepted and offered a place in Aged Care Cert III course!...I was excited at the offer of placement at the same time being overwhelmed with the thoughts of how im going to cope going back to school but i have plenty of support from family and friends and im looking forward to it!...i finished year 12 in 1996 and did an office cert in 1997 so havent done any study since then and have raised 4 of my own children, my youngest 2 1/2 yrs old now...i decided this course was what i needed to do for me...I am looking forward to it as i have an inner yearning to be one of the ones that the elderly are pleased to have with them for their last chapter in their lives...my nan and grandad both ended up in nursing homes and had a handful of very caring, special carers amongst the other uncaring, hard ones who were there simply cause it was a job...i always hold a soft spot for the elderly as i look at them the same as my nan and grandad and know i will be in there shoes one day...I just hope i can get my brain back into study mode and can get my memory back on track...do TAFE students have a high chance of employment after completion of the course?...i did my office course and had no luck with employment, hoping that if i can pass this course i will have a chance of employment and get satisfaction out of what i am doing for others...

Kate, i'm 47, did my Cert 3 last year, I hadn't studied for many many years, I did it externally and completed it in 4 months. You will be fine, Aged Care is so rewarding and as far as you getting a job afterwards I don't think you have a problem. I work in an aged care facility and we get placements all the time, and most of them get employed where i work, if you show how willing and dedicated you are whilst on placement you will get noticed. I am now studying my Diploma in Mursing and so far so good.

Thanks for that you give me hope lol...im sure ill be fine its just so daunting going back to study...good stuff on passing your course and best of luck for your nursing course...i hope im at that stage one day...are you doing your nursing course through tafe?

Hi everyone. It has been great to read about everyones enthusiasm for this field of work. I have been considering working in Aged care for a while and have been inspired. Thanks! My one and only concern is - will I be able to work hours in an Aged Care facility that allow me to be home for my school kids and their school holidays (dont want to shirk my responsibilities as a Mum!)?
Does anyone have any advice about working hours - be it through an agency or casual/PT?
Any advice or feedback would be much appreciated, thanks.

Gabrielle - we actually brought this up with the teacher today and she was saying that it is better to let an aged care facility know what hours YOU WILL be available rather than to say you are available 24/7 and that sometimes they are happy to oblige, they would rather you be honest with them than to say you're available and then complain when you get your roster.....ALSO!...if you go into residential care/home care the hours you work are more flexible...you may only have 2 hours a day or 4 hours a day for 2 days a week depends on who you're through but out of the two if you're really concerned about hours they were recommending home caring...hope that helps!...

The home care work we were told varies from client to client upon what they are assessed and require assistance with...someone may need showering, house cleaning, help shopping etc etc...the next person may only need help cleaning the house...there are agencies that you go through for home care work...we arent allowed to contact prospective employers while we are at TAFE even for nursing home work, we have to wait til our work placements and then ask about work... hope this helps...

I'm about to decide which company to do Cert 3 in aged care and have soooo many ???????? I have worked in disabilities for 10 years as a personal carer and am now wishing to change over to home care of the aged. I had been about to start cert 3 in disabilities a couple of years ago and had completed a self assessment questionaire guided by my supervisor and a women from the skilling company whom was conducting this meeting. As I will be doing this cert in aged instead of disabilities, will some of my competencies be of use in aged care; I would think so; ????? If I had done the cert 3 in disabilities, I was told that because of competencies, I would probabaly not even need to do half the modules of the course; How are competencies proven? I never did find out why not one staff person (9 permanents) including myself ,never got relevent information to provide the tafe with our competencies, to be able to start the course. I do know for a fact that the course was paid for by two lots of funding that the company managed to get for this purpose. I know that that company now runs there own course for cert 3. Anyway, many ??????????
One week later; am going to do cert 3 thru the local tafe here. I figured I have the time and I would prefer to spend $600/$700 instead of nearly $2,000 in doing this.

Hi Consider This Training is a Registered Training Organisation delivering Cert III and IV Aged Care, Cert III HACC and Cert III, IV and Diploma disability. We areVictorian based but not ruling out delivering in other states. Love to tallk more to anyone who is scard or not sure.

Hi all, I am just about to start my Cert III course in a couple of weeks. I have always wanted to do this and hope it isn`t to overwhelming. I am 42 and haven`t studied for quite a few years so bit nervous about it all. I am so excited and just hope that I will be able to pass and start my new career. This is a great site and hope I can get help on here while I am doing the course if needed.

Hi Metime. Well welcome aboard. I know exactly how you are feeling right now yes nervous, excitement, and then gosh this all going to be oh so overwhelming.. Hey I was you in 2009 I worked in the rag trade in NSW. Moved up to QLD I enrolled cert 3 age care. All at the age of 53.. I made it through YES I did some how.. And you will too.. Get your self some reference books, are you doing this course on line or in class room.. Buy your books on line if you can a lot cheaper.. Google as I did I got so much info from QLD government health site.. Anyway good luck
