From what I can see by their website they want a $600 deposit And various fees charged for cancellations etc.. No mention about pay as you learn.. As training colleges do give that option now a days.. There is a list of numbers to phone for more info. Be careful as I would not be placing $600 deposit..

The cost of the course is $2090. If you book a few weeks before the course, they take $100 off so it's $1990. You will need a police check before starting it, which you can get form the counter at any police station.

I was going to do this, had the forms filled out, until it dawned on me that because of the hours (9-4) I wouldn't have anyone watch my kids, oops. (start school at 8:20 and finish at 2:20). It's an ideal way to do it. 2 weeks in the classroom, 2 weeks in placement and then 2 days back at the classroom, doing yoru first aid and a run down of what you have learnt. I've spoken to a lot of people that did it this way, they all raved about it. They get you placement as close as possible to where you live, because the majority of the students are then offered jobs there for when they have finished their course. Every friend of mine got a job offer. They did it at diff times and everyone in their classes got job offers too.

I would still be cautious on these fast track courses. I am of the belief that it is not possible to gain the knowledge required in five weeks. And this course sounds expensive.. I did not pay this amount in 09 and was given an option to pay as you learn.my course ran for 12 weeks. And the cost of the First Aid and police check was included .. All up I paid $1800. My friend recently completed a pathology course at the same training college she paid $2000 that was for 12 week course.. So shop around it probably depends on the state you live in .. Please be aware that you do not automatically gain employment in the facility where you have done your work placement by all means place your application offer to work as a volunteer. All looks good on resume..

Thanks so much for your replies guys. I decided to embark on a 3 mth govt funded classroom based course with a non profit organisation. Includes HACC first aid, food handlers police check all for $187.50 because I am eligible for assistance being a mum on a HCC. So I am hoping to complete early November. Having 12 plus years aged care previous, it has all changed now the way it is done, but I have to redo it all again now. Cant wait to be working again.

Sounds like you are making the right choice. I didn't realise that you had 12 years of age care experience.. Are you working now in age care facility. Your workplace should be funding your further education ..

Sorry I didn't read properly you are not in the workforce.. But for anyone who is working, your workplace has the funding for their staff to further their skills and knowledge...

Hey Giz, That's OK :)

No I am not employed right now. Took time off to have kidlets.

I originally signed up as external via Tafe SA, but even with their concession course, plus text book plus pay for your own Level 2 First Aid I was going to be looking at in excess of $800, that's with concession. I can here get all that inclusive, plus food handlers cert, and all text books needed ( they have their own workbooks) so no need for the Aged Care Aust book, total cost is $187.50, and thats all included with HACC component ( units) added in. Yes, over 12 years, so now I am rusty and quickly finding that out in class LOL. It's all good though. Can't wait for it to be over because its a bit of been there done that, and theres not much thrill for me sitting in class all day long with a bunch of folks who get all squeamish about body fluids.
When I worked there was no requirement for the national standard there is now, no police checks, Only first aid, lifting etc. You walked into jobs one day and were working the next. If they liked you that is.
So I have no idea how much work is out there. I daresay good staff are in high demand as the age care sector increases with the baby boomers coming into retirement age now. Heaps of retirement villages springing up all over the place near me, for those that only require low care, minimal assistance etc.

So I will look at completing Nov, early hopefully and then perhaps agency, as I like and need the flexibility with young family, and then I hope to take that cert and apply for div 2..
