So I'm currently doing the work placement for the cert 3 in aged care. I'm doing 120 hours, and everyone says it's a lot of hours for what's basically voluntary work. Just wondering how many hours other people have done. I think the 120 is the norm for SA at least, but I'm not sure.

I'm about to undertake a cert III which requires 80 hours (I'm in QLD). It depends on which TAFE you are doing it through. I think in the last 2 weeks I have looked at every place that offers it. Shortest was 70 hours, the longest was 200 hours. Most seem to be about 100 hours.

I have just finished 140 hours... it is voluntary or free work. You are in Training and not there to provide free labor, remember that !!!!!

I'm in QLD i did approximately 80 hours I did a twelve weeks through a training college. Tafe is a six month so it s nearly double the hours.. I actually did a further four weeks of volunteer work.. So it depends how you look at things it is not free labour and during my course my educator emphasise that never say you are just free labour. You are there to observe soak in the day to day routine of a carer.

There is a variation in NSW on the total hours of a course. Some organisations only require a few days or a week. Generally the more the better.
I know of an organisation that organises 120 hours. - 3 weeks. The feedback from the facilities is excellent as they say that the student gains enough confidence and
competence in three weeks to become efficient and employable and generally does get offered a position.
